Hearing noises? You may need a transmission shop

If you're not happy with a transmission shop's service or repair estimate, don't hesitate to tow your car to another garage.
Whirring or whining noises coming from under the car can indicate a wide range of problems, including transmission issues.

Perhaps the most common symptom of a transmission problem is commonly referred to as "slipping gears," which means your car literally slips out of gear and into neutral during operation. This can be frustrating and even hazardous, but some symptoms are less subtle.

For instance, your car might not move at all when you start the engine and put it in gear. Or perhaps certain gears just won't work. Whatever the indication, having a competent transmission repair shop diagnose the problem can head off more serious — and more expensive — malfunctions.

Find a transmission mechanic near you.

Guidelines to remember when looking for a transmission shop:
  • Check that the transmission repair shop has affiliations with organizations such as the Better Business Bureau.

  • If the shop does transmission work on-site, look for pertinent certifications in the office or waiting area. The National Institute for Automobile Service Excellence (ASE) uses stringent guidelines to certify mechanics in a variety of specialized disciplines.

  • Note if you see a number of fleet or government vehicles on the shop's lot. That's a likely sign that the shop was the low bidder for the work. Especially with transmission work, cheaply performed repairs can cost you much more in the long run.

  • Service writers should be patient and willing to answer all of your questions about transmissions. Also, warranty and refund policies should be clearly posted in the office or reception area.

  • If you're not happy with a shop's service or estimate, don't hesitate to tow your car to another garage.

  • If time permits, ask for a list of customer referrals. Most people understand the difficulty of finding a good mechanic and will offer their opinions and impressions gladly.

Sometimes my car seems to hesitate or shift sort of harshly as opposed to slipping to neutral.
