Don't stop believin' in a brake shop worth visiting

Often, advertised prices for brake repairs are limited in what they cover. Ask for a written description of parts and services included in the price.
The first step toward understanding brake repairs is learning when you need them. Not having your pads replaced in a timely fashion likely will cause further problems and increase the cost of repair.

In many cars today, brake pads come equipped with sensors that make a scraping noise when it's time to replace them. It's still a good idea to have your brakes inspected for wear at least once a year. Find an auto repair shop near you that specializes in brake repair.

Guidelines to keep in mind

  • Often, advertised prices for brake repairs are limited in what they cover. Ask for a written description of parts and services included in the price.
  • Don't choose a brake repair shop solely based on price. A shoddy brake job can cost you a lot more in the long run.
  • Check with local organizations such as the Better Business Bureau for customer complaints as well as complaint resolutions.
  • Look for signs and stickers indicating shop and mechanic certification. For example, the National Institute for Automobile Service Excellence uses stringent guidelines to certify mechanics.
  • A clean, well-organized brake repair shop is a likely indication of a well-run operation.
  • Service writers should be friendly, patient and willing to answer all your questions.
  • Payment, warranty and refund policies should be clearly posted in the office or reception area.
  • High-tech, modern equipment also is important. Ask if the shop has a brake lathe on premises. This equipment is necessary for some brake repairs and also can keep costs in check.

It's always a good idea to use a brake repair shop that specializes in repairs on your car's make and model. If a shop doesn't specialize, you'll still want to scan the lot for similar makes and model years.

If time permits, ask for a list of customer referrals. Most people understand the difficulty of finding a good auto mechanic and will be more than happy to offer their advice.
