Step away from the vehicle!

Car alarms can be effective in preventing break-ins and stolen cars, but with so many options, it can be difficult to determine the best device for your car.

We've all walked through a mall parking lot, accidentally brushed up against a car then heard the mechanized words of caution: "Warning, step away from the car ... repeat, step away from the car."

Car alarms can be effective in preventing break-ins and stolen cars, but with so many options, from alarms that beep to those that talk, it can be difficult to determine what device makes sense for your car and how much alarm equipment really is necessary.

Choosing the Right Alarm

As a general rule of thumb, car alarm specialists say, a highly visible alarm indicator on the outside of your car is enough to scare off most would-be thieves. With that in mind, it may not be necessary to buy the most expensive alarm on the market, but you'll want something that is visible and will last.

Perhaps the most important feature is the alarm's indicator light. It should be red to urge caution and be highly visible when the alarm is engaged. Many alarm kits come with window stickers for increased visibility.

You'll also want to have remote control activation. Most alarms emit a loud beep when activated by a small device on your keychain. Many remote devices also are equipped with a "panic" button, which enables you to manually sound the alarm in case of a personal attack.

Any alarm that sounds with a resounding beep or series of horn blasts will suffice. You'll want the alert to be loud enough to draw attention from bystanders in case of a break-in.

You should expect to spend about $200 on an alarm from a reputable brand. Often, car audio specialists or general electronics stores are knowledgeable and can help you make the choice that's right for you. Be sure to get a thorough demonstration of precisely how to use your alarm so you're not embarrassed when it sounds and you can't figure out how to turn it off.
