5 ways to avoid car sickness and air sickness when traveling

Did you forget your motion sickness pills at home? If you have an airline boarding pass in hand or a long road trip ahead, you don't have to feel miserable on your travels. Avoid the telltale dizziness, nausea and sweating associated with air or car sickness naturally. Here's how!

  1. Do not read. Sure, grabbing a great novel or the day's newspaper may be a way to pass the time. But, if you're prone to motion sickness, don't strain your eyes on text. Whether you're gazing at an e-reader or printed material, it will make you sick. Instead, watch a movie or television show on a portable DVD player or tablet. Even better, make conversation with your travel buddies!

  2. Drink cold water. Icy, chilled water helps ease the hot, sweaty feeling that goes along with air and car sickness. Take small sips throughout the duration of the trip to ease your stomach and stay cool. If you crave a drink with flavor, add lemon or lime slices to the water.

  3. Avoid odors. When traveling in a small group, and you know that motion sickness is a possibility, ask everyone to keep odors to a minimum. This includes perfumes, colognes, hair styling products, fragrant foods or car deodorizers. Strong odors can trigger or prolong nausea.

  4. Choose seating wisely. Where you sit in a car or airplane makes a huge difference for people with motion sickness. When traveling by air, sit in a window seat that faces the front of the airplane. Keep your focus on the horizon to give your body a sense of place. In a car, choose the front seat. If you're getting a rental car, choose a vehicle with a high wheelbase ??? such as an SUV or van ??? to avoid car sickness.

  5. Enjoy air flow. Open a window or air vent to feel the air blow across your face. Air flow helps with the sweating and dizziness. Take deep breaths of the fresh air through your nose and relax as much as possible. If you can take a nap, do it.
