Hardwood floors or carpeting? Finding a carpet professional who has the proper tools and training to stretch old carpet, re-join the pieces and eliminate the ridges takes some careful research. There is a more elegant solution: installing hardwoods.

The rich and comfortable appearance of hardwood floors adds real value to your home and makes a great impression on your guests. It'll give you a feeling of richness and having a significantly upgraded home.

You can find many professional hardwood flooring installers all throughout the Atlanta area. Their first step will be to remove the old carpeting, dispose of it in an environmentally friendly fashion and begin the preparation of your sub-flooring. Whether your home is built on a concrete slab or uses plywood or plank sub-flooring, there are specific preparations for each.

Next you'll have a wide choice of many solid hardwoods, engineered hardwoods and laminate hardwood products. Let's take a look at each one.

  • Solid hardwood flooring is wood harvested from trees and cut into lengths usually about three inches wide by three-quarters of an inch thick. It goes through a milling process and is usually stained with one of several colors to give you just the right hue to match the decor of your home. Unstained flooring is also readily available.

  • Engineered hardwood flooring has multiple layers of wood, usually five to seven layers, laid down in a criss-cross pattern to give strength. It is seldom more than one-half an inch thick. The surface of the engineered hardwood is then coated with a layer of durable material that gives it long life. It's finished with colors ranging from pine to deep cherry. Engineered products can be glued to the floor, making them ideal for homes built on a concrete slab.

  • Laminate flooring uses fiber board, a paper product, as its principal material. A high-pressure treatment increases its durability. It's coated to give the appearance of real wood. Laminates can also be glued to the floor. They are the least costly option.

Compared to that old carpeting you've lived with, hardwood floors of all types give you many advantages.

  • They are hypoallergenic--unlike carpeting, hardwoods don't trap allergens.
  • They add value to your home.
  • They're durable and can easily last many decades. Further, they're easily maintained and easily repaired.
  • Perhaps most important to Atlanta residents who care about the beauty of their home, installing hardwoods gives a timeless quality that doesn't fade over the years.
