Everyone will get scars at some point throughout their lives, but if you suffer from keloid scars you may feel disfigured. Keloid scars are caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue under the skin, and can happen as a result of any cut, scrape or tear in the skin that would normally cause a flat scar. For example, you may experience keloid scarring from chicken pox or from getting your ears pierced.

Keloid scars have a strong genetic component, meaning that they usually happen as a result of how your body is designed to handle scarring. The keloid scars look like rounded bumps or mounds on the skin, and are often shiny and very smooth. Many people unknowingly mistake a keloid scar for a tumor or mole, causing themselves undue stress and worry. If you have this type of scarring, you do not have to live with these unsightly bumps forever. Talk to your local Atlanta-based dermatologist or plastic surgeon about which keloid treatment options might be right for you.

Some of the top treatments for keloid scars include:

  • Freezing the individual scars: A dermatologist can freeze the keloid scars to cause them to fall off. A numbing injection or topical gel is often applied beforehand.
  • Laser treatments: Fractional CO2 lasers can resurface skin to help damaged, scarred skin slough off. The lasers also promote collagen production.
  • Corticosteroid injections: This type of steroidal treatment may help shrink each keloid scar to make them less noticeable.
  • Surgery: A plastic surgeon or dermatologist can remove the keloid scars in the same way that a mole or skin tag is removed.

It is important to understand that having keloid scars is a lifelong condition, and having them removed may actually cause them to develop into even larger scars. Make sure to talk to your doctor about whether having one of these keloid treatment options is right for you.
