Symptoms of menopause are no joking matter. Ranging from mild to severe, they can debilitate a woman for months if not a few years before finally being alleviated.
Some women claim that they have only one good symptom-free week a month before menstrual symptoms possess their bodies like a hungry demon. Even after years of dealing with bloating, mood swings and abdominal cramps, women still have to go through the "life change" or menopause.
Is it menopause?
Are you having irregular periods after having years of regular scheduled periods? Are your periods coming closer together or farther apart? Any unusual changes in your menstrual cycle may indicate the beginning of this transition.
Other menopause symptoms can include:
You may have experienced one or more of these signs several times throughout your life, but have some of the symptoms remained? If you answered yes, you may be going through the transition of menopause.
Natural ways to find relief
Beat insomnia and mood swings with a healthy dose of exercise. From yoga to aerobic exercise, increasing your heart rate benefits more than your cardiovascular system. After a session of doctor approved exercise, you may find yourself sleeping better and in a positive frame of mind to handle mood swings.
According to a study published by the National Institutes of Health, omega 3 fatty acids reduce hot flashes and depressive disorder caused by menopause. Add fish, like salmon, tuna, or trout to meals to maximize omega 3 content.
Vitamin E has shown some promise in decreasing the severity of hot flashes in some women. With all the other benefits vitamin E provides, it might be a good idea to add foods loaded in this vitamin, like nuts, spinach and even broccoli.
Add acupuncture to your treatment. Acupuncture can be an alternative to medication in some cases when dealing with menopause symptoms.
You are not alone
Menopause will take its toll and you don't have to go through this part of your life alone. Atlanta offers many support groups where you can share your journey with other women who understand and are going through the same transformation. Your OB/GYN can provide more information for different groups near your area, so don't suffer alone - ask for support.
With the help of an Atlanta-based OB/GYN, recognizing the signs early can help you choose treatment options that will help ease certain symptoms and will fit you and your lifestyle.
