Sometimes last-minute decisions--like getting a tattoo during a bachelor party or on an exotic vacation--end up being less than desirable. If tattoo removal is in your future, you have several skin-clearing options to consider. Here are three ways to say goodbye to unwanted ink.

1. Dermabrasion

Also known as resurfacing, dermabrasion physically rubs away the unwanted tattoo. After numbing the skin with a topical spray, a dermatologist uses a tool to wear away the top and middle layers of your skin. The resulting area will look like a deep rug burn that then forms a scab to start the healing process. The newly generated skin may have a slightly different texture than nearby skin.

2. Lasers

If you're interested in a less invasive procedure, ask your dermatologist about laser removal. Over a course of several appointments, the doctor will use a laser beam to alter the pigment in the tattoo. During the removal process, the tattoo will gradually appear increasingly lighter in color. Laser removal is less likely to leave scar tissue behind than surgically removing a tattoo.

3. Surgery

When your tattoo is deep, you may need surgery. A dermatological surgeon carefully cuts away the tattooed skin. Then, he closes the wound with stitches. This can leave behind scars depending on the size of tattoo.
