Organize your spring cleaning projects.

Follow this simple spring cleaning checklist to get your home organized in no time.

Air Conditioning
  • Change all filters
Appliances (Kitchen)
  • Fill spray bottle with mixture 50 percent water and 50 percent rubbing alcohol
  • Use spray mix to clean chrome, glass or stainless steel appliances
  • Lightly wet a clean cloth
  • Dust framed art and photographs
  • DO NOT spray cleanser or water onto the frame as it may seep behind the glass and damage the pictures
  • Turn mattress
  • Launder bedding and pillows
  • Air out the spring blankets before putting them on bed
  • Clean winter bedding before storing
  • Wipe with a damp cloth
  • Throw out anything you never use
  • Vacuum
  • Check for signs of insects
  • Be sure the area is free of anything that bugs might find nourishing, such as dust, other insects, crumbs or food and beverage stains
  • Swap cool-weather clothing for warm-weather ones
  • Wash or dry-clean winter clothing before storing
Doors & Windows
  • Check for leaks and drafts, particularly near the corners
  • Look for peeling and chipping paint, which can signal water intrusion
  • Seal any open areas between the frame and the wall to keep out water, which can deteriorate building materials
Drapes (Reviving)
  • Take down
  • Remove hooks and run them through an air-fluff cycle in the dryer with a damp towel (to attract the dust) for 15 minutes
  • Re-hang immediately
  • Take everything off shelves, tabletops and dressers
  • Don't forget ceiling fans and above kitchen cabinets and baseboards and doorways
Faucets (Bathroom) & Showerheads
  • To remove hard-water scale or mildew on shower- and faucet-heads, soak them in vinegar
  • If the head isn't removable, position a plastic bag filled with vinegar over it and tape it shut
Faucets (Kitchen)
  • If there's a lime buildup, lay paper towels over the fixture and soak it with vinegar
  • Let it set for one hour, so the deposits will soften and become easier to remove
  • Professionally clean and wax wooden floors

Floor tiles

  • Check for worn grout between tiles in the bathroom or kitchen. Re-seal as soon as possible since a small crack may lead to an expensive repair
  • Move away from walls and clean underneath
Furniture (Outdoor)
  • Check care labels first, but mild dishwashing detergent should clean most materials
Furniture (upholstered)
  • Check for loose change or valuables between cushions
  • Vacuum pillows, as well as underneath the cushions
  • Look for stains and clean according to the care label
Home Office
  • Organize important papers
  • Set aside all tax return information
  • Store last year's files
  • Thoroughly clean
  • Wipe up major spills

  • Set to self-clean
  • Organize items
  • Throw out any expired foods
  • If ribboning, make sure to leave room to recognize and retrieve products from the back without destroying your order
Porch & deck
  • Sweep, including around doors and windows for cobwebs and debris
  • Throw out all expired food
  • Throw out any mostly empty containers
  • Throw out items you bought and never used
  • Remove shelves and clean inside with a combination of abrasive salt and bubbly soda water
  • Unplug refrigerator and vacuum the coils underneath
Shower curtains (vinyl)
  • Throw in the washing machine with a few towels
  • Add a cup of white vinegar with your detergent
  • Let air dry
  • Wipe down top
  • Remove coils and clean
Trash cans
  • Spray with a hose and dump out water
  • Spray inside with a disinfectant spray
  • Scrub with a handled brush and rinse
  • Leave upside down to dry
  • Wash inside and out
  • Wipe down the sills
  • For window screens, take outside and rub with kerosene on both sides and then rinse with soap and water. Do in a well-ventilated area.
