* Like many moms, my switch-over to organics started with milk. I kept adding more organic choices to the grocery cart, especially once I read about the Dirty Dozen (the fruits and vegetables grown with the highest number of pesticides–by the way, the 2011 list just came out). Apples, peaches, strawberries–it became organic or nothing for me. Eventually, I started eliminating the toxic cleaning supplies. Now, baking soda, lemons, vinegar, and a terrific all-natural product named Borax are common in my grocery cart. I also really like the line of non-toxic cleaners put out by GreenWorks. I had interviewed the brand manager and asked the hard questions when the brand launched, and I feel good about this product line.
* I started thinking about bedding, especially in my children’s rooms. An organic mattress would be ideal, but is still beyond my budget. Organic sheets and pillowcases? That, I can do. Here are organic sheets from Pottery Barn Kids that will put you in the July 4th spirit. I felt so good about the organic pillowcases (since they are right up against my children’s faces all night), that getting organic cotton bath towels was a no-brainer.
* More toxin-free options for the future? Organic upholstery and window treatments, and formaldehyde-free furniture, cabinetry, and carpeting (it’s apparently the adhesives that are a problem in these things). I could just see my family splayed out on this sectional sofa, which is upholstered in organic fabric, on Movie Night.
* If you’re looking for where to start with toxin-free choices in your home, the nursery makes sense, and there seem to be numerous consumer options for that room. You don’t even have to settle for muted earth tones. How sharp is this black and white organic crib set?
