* When I had a little (however little you’re picturing, picture smaller) apartment in New York City, my friends in other cities would sometimes rag on me about how much my apartment rent was in comparison to what it would cost elsewhere.  I’d reply, “Yeah, but the commute would be terrible.”  All these years later, I still enjoy seeing comparisons of similarly-priced homes from around the country.  So, it was no surprise that this photo slide show (about what you can get for $599,000) caught my eye.  I like the blue door in one, the lighting fixture in another, the horizontal striped walls in a third, and the vibrant color in the one pictured.  I’m not moving to any of those houses anytime soon, but I can take ideas from them.  In fact, I still think about my exposed brick white wall in that tiny apartment and remember how it always made me smile.

Backyard Camping* That goes to show that it’s not about price, but rather value.  And I’m not talking value from the marketplace but rather the value that you place on having a home you love.  Kudzu Facebook fans who laid low and stayed home this past weekend camped in the backyard, watched movies, gave themselves home spa treatments, and even worked on screenplays.  A grassy knoll (or a nice porch for sleeping, if you prefer that–see ideas here), a comfy chair, a working bathtub, and a cleared-off desk or kitchen table is all it took for those homes to earn their keep.  My home is all clean today (for about two more hours until the kids come home), and I can see its possibilities so much more when it’s like this–mostly the possibility of just relaxing for once and enjoying it.

* With job growth sluggish-to-nonexistent, those home-based businesses still have great potential. If you have a craft you’ve been thinking about turning into a hobby business, now might be a good time since fall festivals will be upon us shortly and, even in a down economy, folks still do try to get a little something special for those on their holiday gift lists.  Why not your recycled fabric pot holders? (Find out how to make them here). Or make soap or wooden stools or candles–you know what you like to do.   Get some inspiration here for creating a creative space of your own.

* Wanting to get ahead for the holidays in another very memorable way?  How about gathering the troops and taking that family holiday photo (like these folks)?  This probably means getting the front door painted or fixing the railing.  Do this now while the weather is nice and you’re not too rushed, and you’ll be sitting pretty come crazy time.

Service companies you find on Kudzu can help you get your yard camping-worthy, turn your TV room into a home theater, transform your bathro0m into a spa, and turn an unused bedroom into Hobby Business Headquarters.  As for the holiday photo?  Click through Kudzu before you smile and click.
