Help finally for my reactive dog
When I called Canine PHD, I was at my wit's end. My dog Apollo, who is very sweet with my family, had attacked 3 small dogs. I was completely tramatized by these incidents and I had spent hundreds of dollars in Vet bills. She assessed him using very realistic stuffed dogs. I was impressed. Meredith listened and first set me up with the tools I needed (a muzzle and harness). She showed me how to use them and did a few private lessons before starting us in reactive dog class. I was VERY nervous about him being around other dogs especially without his muzzle but she talked me through it.
In the first class, all the dogs were behind barriers and all they did was learn to be calm and sniff each other's mats. We went very slowly, bringing the dogs out and teaching them to relax, rewarding them for making GOOD choices. I admit, I was still VERY nervous but I learned quickly the tools I needed to feel more confident handling Apollo around other dogs. We have since taken the outdoor reactive class as well and Apollo is now walking next to other dogs without reacting. He has even starting rolling over. I feel like a huge burden has been taken off my shoulders, now that I'm no longer scared to take my dog for a walk. He LOVES to go to class (the hot dog treats don't hurt) and I feel confident on how to handle him, when we go for walks and runs.
