Wow, this was a surprise.
Wow, this was a surprise. A couple of them, actually. Frankly, I wasn't expecting much from this hole in the wall. I stopped in, and much to my surprise, saw bags of flour and, you know, actual ingredients. Not frozen dough or canned sauces. That was surprise number one. The second surprise was that they had actual Chicago style pizza. Not deep pan pizza that's all bread. Real Chicago style pizza. With the thin crust stuffed with mounds of cheese and ingredients, a thin upper crust, and real sauce on top. Sort of like what you get it Nancy's, but at least as good. Maybe even a little better. And for a fraction of the price. Granted, this is colored bit by low expectations. But I'll be back, and often. I haven't tried anything other than the Chicago style, and it's so good that I may never. But the other styles are probably worth a try. In the meantime, this is probably the best Chicago style pizza I've had outside of the city of Chicago, at least since Uppercrust closed back in the 80s. The prices here are amazing. Little Ceasar's prices, but for real pizza. Take out or delivery only.

A terrific experience
I decided to give this place a try after finding a Groupon deal. I'm so glad I did. What a terrific experience! Friendly folks and a great haircut. Even my wife was pleased. The hot shave is a must, at least once. Highly recommended.

Jake's Ice Creams & Sorbets posted on 4/27/2010
Just fantastic, and a great environment.
I first discovered Jake's Ice Cream about six or seven years ago (thanks to my pal Katy) and I've loved it ever since. It is, quite frankly, the best I've ever had, bar none. And believe me, I've tried quite a bit. I love good ice cream. Jake's is made by hand in small batches, and while it's much harder than soft serve, it's still softer than most. It actually tastes like what you might get out of a real, honest-to-God, old-fashioned churn at home, if you had the genius to create such amazing recipes as Chocolate Slap Yo Mama and Brown Sugah Vanilla. The flavors are amazing and constantly changing. My favorite, the astonishingly delicious Brown Sugah Vanilla, is usually available, although some of the other varieties of vanilla, such Yo Daddy's Vanilla, Honey Vanilla, and Vanilla Malt, are a little more rare. Not to worry, though, they are all terrific. I am especially fond of cinnamon ice cream ... and have more than once visited Jake's and found two different cinnamons available at the same time. In all, I've found five different cinnamons at one time or another, including Cinnamon Chocolate, Cinnamon Roll (with real pieces of yummy cinnamon rolls), Cinnamon Kenya AA (cinnamon with coffee!), Cinnamon Apple Piescream, and just plain Cinnamon. I'm not sure I could pick a favorite. Although in the interest of journalistic investigation, I intend to keep trying.

Mac McGee Irish Pub posted on 1/22/2010
A terrific addition to Pubtopia
There's now officially no question about it. With the addition of Mac's and it's bright red door, Decatur is now one of America's very best pub crawl spots ... and maybe the absolute best outside of Boston. The pub is cozy, friendly, and welcoming; you'd think it had been there for decades rather than a month or two. The food exceeds my (very high) expectations, and the drink list is amazing. Mac's now joins my beloved Brick Store and Grange as my "holy trinity" of oubs. Like the Grange, it's a pretty good place to write, too. Highly recommended.

One of my "holy trinity" of best pubs
This place is friendly, comfortable, and homey. The drink list is to die for, and the menu is solid, far above standard pub fare. The traditional Music sessions on Tuesdays are not to be missed. Decatur is now very possibly the very best pub crawl location in all of America outside of Boston. Highly recommended.

Absolutely recommended highly
I called around 10 am, and by 2:30, my broken window was repaired perfectly. The technician was polite, professional, and skilled. When I came out to check on him, I found him on his hands and knees vacuuming shards of glass off my driveway. All of my expectations were exceeded.

Dependable, honest
There may be better deals in town, but these guys have never let me down. My car is ready when promised, they are polite, and the wallet hit isn't as bad as it could be.

The Thinking Man Tavern posted on 9/2/2007
Alas, how one bad experience can turn you away...
My wife used to call this place the neighborhood living room, and I couldn't have agreed more. However, we were there yesterday, and the owner was astonishingly rude to us. We will not be back, and we're having to move a writers' group that was to meet there weekly, and we sincerely regret all the recommendations we've given to friends. We were very, very hurt by the experience. Our regular excursions have come to an end.
