Just Wanted to Sell a Chimney Cap
I called Atl Chimney Doctors as one of 3 contractors to look at a water dripping/leak problem I had around my chimney. When I called Atlanta Chimney Doctors, the person said it was probably my chimney cap and to replace it would cost about $990. I asked him to come out and look at the chimney to confirm it was the problem. He came out that afternoon, went up on the roof for less than 5 minutes (one story off my back deck), took a picture of the chimney cap, and said I needed to replace the cap. When I told him I had other contractors coming out to look at the problem and give me a bid, he said that I owned him $85 for this visit. If I selected him to make the repair, he'd deduct that amount from the final bill. While nothing had been said about a payment when talking over the phone, I just paid him with a check. MY MISTAKE!! Two other contractors came out, looked at the chimney cap, but said it could easily be repaired with some caulk and paint. One contractor identified that the real problem was in the way the new shingles had been installed around the chimney from a re-roofing job several years before. Total cost of repairs came to less than $300. Neither contractor requested any payment for coming out to look at the problem, and indicated it was not a common practice to do so. There were so many issues with what happened here, I made a complaint to the Better Business Bureau (the first I've ever submitted)on the tactics being used by Atlanta Chimney Doctors.
