Better take a train trip while they still exist
I've gone to New Orleans a few times on the Crescent. I always upgrade from the basic coach seat to either a roomette or a full bedroom. And here's why: you get your meals included in the price, PLUS you get a private bathroom or toilet, and you can stretch out on the bed, unlike in coach. Also coach seating can be very cattle-herd-like, complete with screaming kids and smelly adults. You also have YOUR OWN personal attendant. I was pampered. Round trip Atlanta to New Orleans, under $200, for a bedroom and six meals included. Yes, they can have delays, but this is the fault of the national rail system. Be advised I did sit on a train that sat still for *six* hours somewhere near Tuscaloosa one summer. We arrived into New Orleans nine hours behind schedule (4 a.m.) and that kind of ruined that first evening in New Orleans.
