beautiful, impressive, profound art
I have bought two of Archen's paintings so far, and have my eye on a third. The two I bought ("Destin" and "Destin at Night") are beach scenes, one from ground level, one from the air. What grabs me about both, in addition to the beauty of the scenes themselves, is their three-dimensional perspective: how seemingly few strokes and colors become an intensely rich view of sky, clouds, frothing water, and white sand stretching into the distance. The aerial view, in addition, makes me feel like I'm floating: the ocean starts at a point right below me, 100 feet down, and races toward a distant horizon, where tiny clouds populate a darkening sky. (She painted it from a hotel window, and the painting accurately captures that perspective.) The third picture is "Modern Shiva": a beautiful young woman, her facial features representing nearly every race on Earth, standing with a Mona Lisa-like smile inside a circle of candles, lighting and unlighting them by passing her hands over them. Around her flows a poem about art, verse, and life. The painting is rich with several levels of symbolism, simultaneously simple and profound -- to me, not only a beautiful painting, but an embodiment of poetry. I'm impressed with Archen's work, and expect and hope to buy more over the years.
