ridiculous interview process
They have a ridiculous interview process that is a little too scrupulous for its own good. I mean really, do I have to fill out paper work just to get hands on time with the dogs? The lady i worked with was rude and actually tried to convince me I couldn't handle a dog, seemingly because I was in my twenties and putting myself through college. Whatever, they turned me down and next week i adopted a dog from small dog adoption. Dont be fooled by the name on the building, there are so many options and pets that need homes that its not really worth the trouble of dealing with this place, or the bias they display towards young individuals and couples that want pets. I recommend the furkids small dog pet adoption; they even gave me a week trial period to see if the pet worked for me.

Let Down!
APR ended up with our Schnauzer after a cross up with the microchip company and the animal shelter. We were not notified she was found because the microchip was in transfer. We called and explained the situation to APR and at first they acted like they really wanted to help us get our baby back. Then even with the microchip company verifying we were the owners they said we were not getting her and we needed to contact Gwinnett animal control where they got her from. I know they are not obligated to give her back but I think it's bad business. They told us how much it would be up front and we agreed so we are not trying to snatch a freebie. We were also told she was being housed with 8 other dogs. I feel for the low dog in the pack. To me it seems like organized hoarding. Attitudes like theirs is what makes the freebie and the mill market flourish. I don't see how they can think making her live with a hoard of other dogs is better than sleeping on her mommy and daddy's bed, going for walks, cuddling in our lap ect.. I also don't understand why people would permit themselves to be grilled like a toasted cheese sandwich and pay outrageous adoption fees when there are so many other places out there to adopt.

Parents Beware - Lesson in inequality today!
My family and I visited the Atlanta Pet Rescue on 14th Street in Atlanta after the counselor interviewed us she mentioned she liked us and granted us the opportunity to spend time with the dog of our choice. We were there first for this particular dog therefore was interviewed first. The interview went great we've done our research and were well prepared to take our dog home. A counselor interviewing another family talked with our counselor in private and everything changed. Apparently, the other family who was also interested in the same dog. However we were first. When our counselor returned she informed us that another family wanted to adopt both dogs given them the opportunity to keep the dogs together. We could have also adopted both dogs! However, I have been following APR for three months and I've noticed that consistently this type of request is usually stated on their web site. In this case it was not. Our counselor added at the last minute that the other family previously put an application in to adopt the dog before my family. According to their policy that is against the rules. My children were in tears confused as to why the dishonesty and unfairness. Further, if it were indeed true that the other family put an application in for the same dog prior to our visiting APR why didn't the counselor mention this prior to both the interview of my family and more importantly prior to her bringing the dog in to spend time with my young children. Disgraceful!

Great Experience - Friendly Staff - Wonderful Pet!
We adopted from APRA four years ago, and had a completely positive experience. They take great care of the pets they have, making sure that each one is in good health before letting them be adopted, and their standards for pet adoption are very fair. The shelter is clean and the website for looking at pets is fantastic. I felt completely confident about the little guy we brought home (and he has turned out to be more wonderful than we could ever have dreamed!). Lyndel helped us through the process and was so friendly and sweet. I have sent several friends to APRA and will continue to recommend and support them - and as soon as I have the space for another pet, I'll be going back!
