I'd Definitely Give this One a Shot., 9/22/2006

My husband and I are building a 5,000 square foot home in the country. We got a bid for building our wrought-iron staircase from a friend of a friend; and I called "Joel" out of the phone book to... see whether he'd also like to bid the job. I told him we'd just as soon go with the "friend," but not if his bid was high. Joel was very friendly, smart, and helpful. He told me that he now specialized in building custom wine cellars only, but he pushed me to let him give me feedback on the bid I had gotten for the staircase. After looking at the numbers, he assured me that the contractor was offering me a fair bid; then Joel suggested that I consider putting in stain-grade risers instead of MDF. All this for free, on the phone, and obviously done because he likes being helpful. We went on to discuss his dedication to building fine wine cellars. I'd definitely ask this man to build me a wine cellar---if I wanted one.
