We finally decided to build out our basement after 10 years living in the house. Initially I thought about doing a fair amount of the work myself and contracting out the parts like HVAC, electricity, plumbing... For comparison I decided to contact a basement finishing company (Cherokee Basement) to get an idea of what they would charge. I called Rick and he came over within an hour of my call. We reviewed everything I was looking for and he gave me advice on several components of the project. One thing he said that really got my attention was that I could do a lot of the finishing myself like the trim, flooring and painting therefore saving me quite a bit of money. He got back with me in a matter of days with a quote. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised with the estimate. I figured it was just not worth the hassle to deal with numerous contractors trying to coordinate and spec everything. So I decided to use Cherokee Basement and could not be more pleased with the outcome. I did do the painting, floor and some of the trim work. We get so many compliments on the design and work. I would definitely use Cherokee Basement again.

I chose Cherokee Basements on the recommendation of a neighbor. 8 months into a 3 month project I regret that decision. The company's estimate came in equal to other companies' estimates, and overall I am pleased with the quality of the work. He also proposed building a play house under the stairs, which my children love and I wouldn't have thought of. The finished product is great, but if I'd wanted it to take 8 months I could have done it myself.
Finishing of previously studded basement with stubbed bathroom, kitchenette, and 3 rooms. Approximately 970 sq ft total.

Rick is very methodical and precise to his approach in basement build outs. He is upfront and honest sharing all the details with you about your goals for the project, costs and completion. He also sets the proper expectations for project timeline completion. Would definitely recommend him for a basement buildout.

Our basement was finished 6yrs ago by Cherokee basements. We found them through a neighbor who used them. At the time we were very happy with the job they did for us. We subbed out a couple items and they worked with us on that. Most importantly they came in on budget and on time. We had a drop dead date because we were having an event at our home and they did it! Well 6 yrs later we are still very happy with the quality of their workmanship and would highly recommend them to any friend. I know its taken 6yrs to do a review but that has to be worth a lot more than one done 6 days after :)

Our renovation was done with very quality work at a reasonable price. Communication was sometimes great, sometimes lacking, and the project ran over timeframe, but we are overall very happy with our finished product and have even received great customer service since our project completion. Emails are returned very promptly and there were absolutely no budget surprises - we paid exactly what was estimated.

Hired Cherokee Basements to finish our basement. Project began Aug. 2014 with an estimated completion date of Nov. 2014. There were many times throughout the project when the owner avoided phones or texts, and simply never returned the call. The owner was rarely onsite, and there was never any rhyme nor reason as to when he or his worker would be at our house to perform the work. Due to his lack of being onsite, there were many instances when things were installed incorrectly by his worker...i.e our media room doors. His worker walled in the 7 ft opening to 6 ft and installed the incorrect doors (6 ft vs 7 ft). Later, the owner blamed us and said the change in doors was a causal factor in the delay of our project!!!!! In mid-December, the owner quit our project. On this day, it had been over 9 days since anyone from Cherokee Basements had been out to work on our project despite repeated emails and text messages asking when exactly the work would be completed. During a conversation on this day,the owner cussed at me and threatened to sue me when I said that I had rights as a consumer to know that the expected work would be completed in a timely manner.....we were a month over the projected completion date yet no one shows up for 9 days? Also, this is 9 days after his worker hit my mailbox and knocked it out into the street. It took the owner over 24 hours to return my husband's calls and text message regarding the incident. Horrible experience.

We had a basement completed by Mr. Rick Massey and Cherokee Basements. This was by far the best contractor we have ever dealt with. From the initial contact until the job was completed we could not have asked for a better experience. The contracting process was easy, the workers are experienced, very polite and always kept the job very clean. Any questions we had were answered quickly and honestly and we were kept informed on the work schedule and progress of the job. Mr. Massey was very accommodating with changes, offering well thought out solutions for some possibly challenging situations. We highly recommend Mr. Massey and Cherokee Basements for your building project.

I recently worked with Cherokee basements. I found them to be professional, efficient and trustworthy. I was never charged for things I did not ask for. As for previous comments. I found Mr. Massey to be very honest and trustworthy. The project went smoothly and as expected. In fact, he went above and beyond what I ever dreamed of or expected. I would definitely recommend Cherokee Basements to my friends and would use them again.

By far the worst experience I've had with a contractor. I hired Rick in September for a basement job with a completion date of December. In April (note 7 months after the contract was signed), we were fed up and hired an attorney to correspond with Rick and Cherokee Basements. Despite our many efforts to work with Rick, he has continuously lied to "buy time". For instance, on several occasions he promised us that workers would be at our house yet they never showed up. Furthermore, since he is rarely on site, he is usually unaware of what his staff is or is not accomplishing. In some cases, work was completed incorrectly or inadequately. When we called him to discuss issues related to the basement, he often gave us inaccurate information or avoided our phone calls. Needless to say, all of the work was not completed and I hired someone else to finish the job.

I emailed Rick and did not hear back for a week and a half. We had set up an appointment at 9:30 and it is now 11:15 and he has not called or showed up. If we can not even get past the first appointment, I could not imagine what the rest of the project would be like. If you make an appointment with him expect to waste your day.

Not sure why there are any bad reviews, actually. I hired Cherokee Basements to fix water damage in my basement. It turns out someone who owned the house prior to me had work done without permits. The owner Rick Massey explained all this to me, and fixed it for a fair price. He was very professional and the job was done in a timely manner. The inspector for the county we live in stated that Cherokee Basements has been around for a long time and that they always do good work. I would choose them again if I ever need work done!

This is the first review I have ever written, but I am compelled to review this company because this was the absolute WORST experience we have ever had with a contractor. Our experience with Cherokee was an absolute nightmare. The owner is RUDE and DISHONEST. He lacks integrity (lied repeatedly) and charged us for things without disclosing to us there would be incremental charges or what those charges were. We would have filed a complaint with the BBB but could not afford for Cherokee to further delay (or sabotage) our project. We are fair, honest, and peaceful consumers and were flabbergasted when the owner literally CUSSED US OUT when we were trying to explain to him the things that were not working (and still not working) in our basement. We have to come out-of-pocket to fix things he broke. The owner is EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL. He doesn't return calls, stands you up, and flat out lies. To be fair, there were positives-craftsmanship was good (thanks to Jose). But that truly does not make up for the HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. Choosing a basement contractor is a MAJOR decision as you will likely be investing several tens of thousands of dollars into the project as we did. Think hard about who you go with and do not rely on BBB ratings alone. Get personal referrals (that are NOT provided by the company.) I wish we had done that before signing on with Cherokee. All I can say is thank goodness we have an attorney in the family.

I am unable to comment on Quality of Work or Value since we did not get past the initial estimate. Our appointment was at 9:30. I called at 9:40 to be told he was just around the corner. I called again at 10:10 and he was in the neighborhood. No apology when he arrived. I asked him to tell me about his company and received a terse "we finish basements." It went downhill from there. I would assume this is why they have not been reviewed in almost 2 years.

I recently received several quotes for a basement in my new home I purchased and then decided to go with Cherokee Basements again because of some work they did for me a few years ago. Once again I was so pleased and thought why did I even think about going to anyone else.
