One of the Worst Doctors In Atlanta, 6/07/2013

We took our daughter to Children's Ortho for Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, and we saw Dr. Michael Schmitz. Dr. Schmitz was a model of improper behavior....not only was he unfamiliar with the... condition y daughter had, he proceeded to accuse her of faking it and my wife of using the opportunity to fraudulently obtain painkillers. He demonstrated an ignorance of a medical condition that he had agreed to see her for, and a lack of compassion that had to be experienced to be believed. For him to still have a position with Children's Ortho is inexcusable. Perhaps the organization as a whole is on par and professional, by Dr. Michael Schmitz should be avoided at all costs.

DISAPPOINTED! Save your time and energy., 11/28/2011

Our three year old broke her clavicle on vacation and our pediatrician recommended we follow up with Children’s Orthopedics of Atlanta. I scheduled an appointment a week in advance at the Alpharetta... location. Within that week, the appointment changed three separate times. I was left 2 voicemails with the 2 old appointment times/days and received a letter with the incorrect information. Once we did arrive at our scheduled time I was met by a rude and unprofessional front office staff. After filling out our paper work, we waited for 45 minutes (after our scheduled appointment time) before the receptionist called me back up to the desk to let me know I needed a “referral”; even though we have an open HMO. I called the pediatrician (for the 3rd time) who had to talk to the receptionist - on my phone - to let her know that we did not need a referral. An hour and 20 minutes after our appointment time we finally saw the x-rays techs followed by a PA which was fine and lasted about 10 minutes total. My advice to ANY potential patients is: AVOID. Your doctor can recommend another place (like Pediatric Orthopedic Associates). The front office staff is completely rude, unprofessional and inept. Scheduling is incompetent. My advice to the receptionist and her manager with the bad attitudes – you’re both really lucky to have a job in this economy and especially during this time of year - I would consider re-adjusting your attitudes.

Mr. Ritchie, we are sorry that you feel this way. Dr. Schmitz is a well-rounded, superbly trained doctor who was unable to find an anatomical reason for your daughter's pain. We had X-rays and MRIs taken and reviewed them with your family as well to show no orthopaedic reason for her pain. At that point, Dr. Schmitz suggested visiting someone who could better help your daughter. Dr. Schmitz's concern with continuing to prescribe the painkillers was in an attempt to help elucidate the underlying etiology of her pain. This is the same plan of care that he would give to any patient in the same position.

I am as disappointed as you are to hear of your experience at our Alpharetta office. It is atypical for an appointment to change and unfortunately it happened to you twice. There is no excuse for unprofessional behavior and for that we are sincerely sorry. Our front desk staff is trained for multiple insurance carriers and even open HMO plans do often need a referral. Again, we apologize for your inconveniences and do hope that you will give us another attempt to show you our professionalism and fantastic patient care.

Fantastic repair of double compound fracture

My daughter received a double compound fracture in her forearm. Dr. Schmitz did a stellar job on the her surgery (debridement and ulnar rod)and aftercare. Their bedside manner with her was terrific (she was almost never scared), they educated me and kept me informed, and she was 100% back to her regular sport(rock climbing!!) in just three months. Her arm looks and feels perfect. I only give them a four for value b/c they were pricey and when my daughter was treated did not take Blue Cross. However, I gather that this is that is rectified now. My older child dislocated her shoulder and we will absolutely be seeing this group if she needs surgery, even though they are a long drive for us. I trust them 100%.

We are so glad that you had a great experience with Dr. Schmitz and our staff. You are correct, we do now take Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you are an HMO customer, you would need a referral first. We work hard to strive for great patient care and are happy to hear that is what you received.
