I signed a year lease in 2006. 3 months into it my sister died and I had to take on her two cats. I already had one, so that made three and there was not enough room. I went to the front desk to ask what steps to take to move out. I offered that they keep my $2100 deposit, I would pay an extra month's rent, plus offer a month's free rent for the next tenant. They did not accept this offer! Instead, they sent me a demand 2 weeks after moving out for $9500-the rest of the lease plus 50% collection fee! Of course now I had to get a lawyer. So I did. They sat on that apartment for the next 8 months and only rented it out the week my lease was up! By the way, the place was in perfect condition (even sent me a letter stating so) when I left. I took out ads for the apartment at their request and sent people down to them to check out, and they would sell them cheaper apartments, offering $100 per referral. They made no effort to rent the place! Now the case is over and sickeningly, the judge ruled in their favor based on the fact "I had a contract". It was the judge's first civil trial and he's old-money-never had to rent in his life...yay for me. Now I am facing $12K on legal fees plus I owe them $6500. There is no justice for renters. These people have no compassion or decency. Please beware!
