I am a long time resident of San Diego and frequent visitor to the Gaslamp Quarter. Went to Croce's Jazz Bar last night for an after dinner drink and jazz music with 3 friends visiting from out of town My friends saved me a seat at the far end in the back of the bar. After I sat down, I was bulging into but by no means obstructing the path to the far back end of the bar where an additional 7 people were sitting. The manager (I think) approached me and said I had to stand, because it was a violation of the fire code. I attempted to move the chair more out of the way. It wasn't good enough for this guy and he actually took the barstool away and told me I had to stand while my 3 friends sat! There was no attempt to accomodate us whatsoever. The bar wasn't even that full - maybe 20-25 people in the whole bar. Needless to say, we left immediately. I will not come back to Croce's because of this. There are literally scores of bars up and down the street where this sort of thing is not an issue and you will be treated like a valued customer in this time of recession. Croce's just doesn't get it.
