Transplant Department worst medical experience
From the very beginning I experienced horrible treatment. Never received a phone call to set-up an appointment. I did receive a letter stating I had a mandatory 7 hour long appointment on Thursday. I received this letter on Tuesday. At this Appointment I watched a member of the financial staff become somewhat verbally abusive to an elderly couple because they did not understand what she was saying. I had further appointments dictated to me with no ability to change them in any way to fit my schedule. I went to the 8 hour-long examination where I was treated like a part on an assembly line. I had a nurse in the kidney transplant team literally tell me that the dialysis machine would “steal my soul” I had the physician ask why I was taking a particular medication when this medication is the only treatment currently known for the kidney disease that I have.
I was then dictated another set of 8 appointments that couldn’t be made to fit into my 2 day work week. When I tried to email the scheduler more than a week in advance. I got no response for a full 7 days. Wrote to the patient ambassador. She responded with a form letter that did say I would be “contacted by the department director”. That was months ago. I eventually received a form letter telling me I had been dropped from the program after I had already switched to another program.
Avoid this hospital!

Teaching Hospital
Good services with physicians on staff who are up to date on cutting edge techniques. Facility is old and renovated in places, but has lots of hallways, and it seems to take forever to get from point a to point b - thank goodness for valet parking

The transplant team is a cruel joke...
They will put you on the list knowing you'll never be offered an organ. In fact, they NEVER gave my mother a pager to let her know if there was an liver for her. They "called" her on the phone but blamed her for not showing up on time. They refused to give her a transplant because she was too sick or other excuses such as she didn't have enough family support yet our family met a woman at Emory who was over 50 yrs old, lived alone, and was near dead when she was given a liver transplant. My mother had an instinct that Emory was a bad place to consider having her possible transplant done there. She asked for her medical records be transfered to another hospital which ultimately took her off the list ( I feel she was blackballed). They treated her inhumanely and she had to jump through hoops all for nothing! This happened last yearshe passed away at the end of January....

I'd never go there again
I was in Emory for a week years ago. It was the worst experience in a hospital. The nursing staff was downright cruel. They made fun of me outside of my room, told me I was making trouble when I just politely asked if I can have shampoo to wash my hair, one nurse told me while laughing that they would call a medical student to "practice" putting an IV in my neck vein and "it will hurt like %^&*", did not get the IV of antibiotics dripping while I had a temperature of 103 until a new nurse the next day caught it, told me that other people were much sicker than I was and that I should not even be there ( my doctor put me in there), told me that I had to clean up the blood that dripped all over the floor when they took my blood one day and never applied pressure to the site (I didn't do it),and the last day a nurse stood over me while I filled out the nurses evaluation everyone gets when being discharged and said, "I'm making sure you write down good reviews". I really could have sued them but I just wanted to get out. They even told me that the fill-in doctor for my doctor was upset that she had to come in and take care of me.You don;t tell a patient that. I wrote a letter to the patient advocate but never recieved a reply and a friend of mine who worked at the hospital witnessed some incidents and also went to the patient advocate.

Proceed with Caution
EUH the supposed flagship of this system? Only if you know nothing about healthcare! Being a nurse I questioned the care received, I.E. wrong meds being administered, wound with scar from a Nurse Practitioner, never informed the primary had a Nurse Practitioner, injury sustained from wrong placement of chest tube, and discharged prematurely for questioning care! Does this sound like good care to you? Complaint sent to CEO - prefunctory response. Although I was upfront that care was poor, with evidence, and I wouldn't pay - I was sent to collections for $100.
They have no concept of Quality care or customer service. The problem - every department works independently and never communicates with another - right up to the CEO
