I had the same BAD experience described by other recent customers. Brandon came by, I gave him his $100 consultation fee to be applied toward the work if I hired him. He gave me an excellent plan, at a very good price. Then, he kept putting off the start date. We finally had a specific date. I waited at the house for him all morning. No answers to my phone or email messages. When I got to work the next day, he had sent a cryptic message to my work email: "something came up; need to reschedule. Thursday?" I replied that I waited all morning for him at the house. I never heard from him again. If you think about it, this is a nice little side business for him--taking $100 "consultation fees", but never showing up or acting like such a jerk that no one hires him. We ought to all contact the BBB.

So, I hired Brandon based on a friend's experience with him. It started off well enough - he was pleasant, we discussed what the job would entail. We agreed to fencing in our yard and doing a custom horizontal style gate as he shows on his website. He assured me it would be no problem and the schedule would work out fine. I met him on the first day at the job - everything seemed fine. But, through out the job I'd call or go by and he wouldn't be there when I expected and the project ran slightly behind. But, he did finish and I thought everything was fine. Shortly there after I realized everything was not fine. Some boards were missing nails. The cool horizontal gate had slats that were crooked and falling because pieces were not secured properly. Also, the wood was splitting where he put in the latch for the gate. Eventually the screws were pretty much coming out of the wood and the latch was rendered useless. I called him and emailed him pictures. Without trying to be rude I told him that the gate looked sloppy and defeated the whole purpose of having a clean modern look for the gate that matched the house. That prompted an angry email and confrontational phone call from him. Nevertheless, he said he'd come by and take a look at it when he got back from vacation in three weeks. I let four weeks go by - I emailed him and got no response. Now his phone is cut off and his website is down. So, looks like I'm out of luck.

Brandon came out and gave us a great estimate for sod, fence replacement, and pressure washing. He told us that it'd be about two weeks until he could get us on his schedule, and that he'd call a few days ahead of time to confirm. We got everything ready, and started the waiting game... Which we seem to have lost. Every couple of weeks, Brandon was kind enough to string us along a little longer, going as far as to give us a "you are starting on Monday." That was the last we heard, on April 4th. Monday came and went, my wife waiting with a check in hand... no Brandon. I called, I emailed... nothing. His business must be booming - great for him. Not sure what it was about our $6000 estimate that wasn't enough to "win" his service, but we have since been told that, had he actually laid the sod in our shady backyard, it would have died within a couple of months. If your plantation needs millions of dollars of landscaping, maybe he'll be willing to show up - or at least tell you why he didn't. I don't know if our polite patience offended him, or if he dropped his Iphone in the toilet and lost my phone number, email address, and street address. But if you want a landscaper that you can count on, I'd look elsewhere.

I've personally known the guys that own & run GrassRoots Landscaping for over 15 years & I can honestly say they are the most dedicated, honest & well-knowledged folks you can find.

I emailed GrassRoots Landscaping because I absolutely HATED my flowerbeds. Brandon replied to my email and came out (all the way to Hall Co.) to give me ideas on what to plant. He took into consideration my wants/needs, likes/dislikes and came up with the perfect arrangement. He gave me a detailed plan as well as cost for me to buy the plants myself and then gave me a quote on what it would cost for him (GrassRoots) to do it. After adding up the cost of the plants, I realized that it wouldn't cost that much more to have Brandon, the professional, do it for me. Brandon was able to squeeze me into his schedule in less than a week and finished the job in one day. It looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! Brandon has a GREAT vision and knows plants. Hire him to do your landscaping...I promise, you will LOVE him.

Called Brandon after reading the reviews on here to have a deck, fence, firepit, patio and some backyard landscaping done. I had about a 35000 budget. I talked to Brandon one time, he said he was onsite at a job and would call me back about an estimate. No prob, you're busy. He calls back 2 days later and I missed the call cause I was busy. I called back about 30 minutes later and left a detailed message..... Nothing. Called a day or 2 later.....nothing. Called a week later.....nothing. So....I can only assume the man doesn't want money. I know things have picked up with the economy turnng around some, but he's not too busy for a 35000 dollar backyard job. I can only surmise that this man thought I was playing around....but I don't really care. If you're that busy that you cannot return phone calls get an asssistant or secretary. But it actually turned out to be a good thing. I found C&M residential and the owner was MORE than happy to receive my business; in fact, he won't be able to get the project finished until late July at the earliest because they are REALLY that busy and not just playing. On top of that, they can actually do all the things I needed that grassroots isn't equipped to do, like repaving the driveway and automating the fence, plus building a custom playground. He talks good game but I haven't seen it. No multi decks either? Weak. I'll spend an extra 7 grand with c&m but time is money.....I can't wait to see the excuses to this review..

We regret that we missed your call. Everyone who expresses interest in GrassRoots is important to us. Best of luck with your project. -Brandon
Brandon and Joe do quality work at a fair price. Our fence looks fantastic! It was a pleasure doing business with them and look forward to future projects with Grassroots!

We have been super busy and I am just getting around to responding to some reviews... We appreciate your feedback and look forward to doing more business down the road as well... Glad you like the fence! Thanks for the kind words! Have a great summer! -Brandon
I had the owner Brandon and his helper come out to the house and cut a hole in my deck as well as level the land and install a concrete pad in order for me to install a hottub. I actually got 3 quotes and their's came in lower then their competitors. I was a little concerned they might not do as good of a job, but I was happily mistaken. They came out on time and did an outstanding job. I wanted to have them install concrete pavers but they convinced me that they could shift over time. They told me the job would take 2 full days, but they finished in ahead of schedule and the materials came in less then they thought, so they refunded me the difference. I would definitely recommend these guys to anyone as they were very professional and the owner of the company actually did the work instead of pass it on to his employees. Thanks Guys!

Hey no worries....I am glad the hot tub worked out for you! -Brandon
I just purchased a house and thought that the only thing missing was a back deck. I had heard good things from some friends about Grassroots so I called them up and Brandon came out super quick to give me an estimate. The deck was finished lickety split and looks awesome. I couldn't have asked for a better deck or friendlier service. I am looking forward to more great weather in order to enjoy my deck!! Thanks Grassroots!!

Glad to build the deck! It was great working in such a historic area. Thanks for the business...enjoy these cool Cabbagetown summer nights!
Adding a fence to my yard was a big purchase for me, and when I make big purchases I tend to scrutinize every aspect of it. I have absolutely no reservations or regrets about the work done to my home. Grassroots did fast but careful work. They were great guys and obviously cared about customer satisfaction. They did the work exactly as I asked and even talked to me about future projects without trying to sell me any more of their services, just free, good advice. Thanks guys!

Glad you were satisfied...its why we do what we do! Let me know if you need anything down the road! -Brandon
We recently undertook a joint project with our next door neighbors to replace our backyard fences. GrassRoots provided us with one of the first quotes, and then worked with us to compare subsequent quotes. Their willingness to take the time to talk with us and compare with us, knowing that we might ultimately choose another company, was truly an example of first-class service. We ultimately decided to go with GrassRoots and have been thrilled with the results. We chose an inverted scallop cedar fence, which GrassRoots installed and finished by hand, creating custom curves between posts. They took into account the topography of our yard perfectly, and made custom adjustments where needed without us ever having to ask. Even after the installation, they followed up to make sure we were happy and even sent someone out when we had a question. We would absolutely recommend Brandon and his team ... in fact we've already asked them for a quote on a new project.

We enjoy what we do and are glad you are happy with the end result!
We have a hill in our front yard that has eroded over the years and has become a problem. We called Grassroots to come and give us a plan and an estimate. We decided to go with Brandon's suggestion. He seemed knowledgeable and the price was appropriate. Grassroots took two days to do the job and Brandon and his crew worked deligently and professionally. When they finished, Brandon wanted to be sure that we were pleased and he also made sure to explain to us what they were doing as they worked. We have had several neighbors compliment our new landscaping and you can be sure we recommended Brandon and Grassroots. We are going to have them come back and rebuild a backyard fence and walkway from the deck.

Thanks for the great review but more importantly, thanks for the business! We strive to be the best...let us know if we can help with anything in the future!
If you are looking for a landscaper that will deliver quality work, stand behind their work and honor their contract, then do not hire GrassRoots and Brandon Chonko. We hired Brandon to install a paver path in our backyard, and three days after completion it rained and a major portion of the path washed out. Brandon's contract stated that the path was under warranty for four years assuming the path was not misused. Brandon argued that there was a "pre-existing condition" that caused the damage and refused to comply with his warranty and refused to discuss the situation until we threatened legal action. When he finally engaged with us, we agreed, in good faith, to pay for materials if he would repair the path. However, after agreeing to terms via email, Brandon refused to negotiate a simple contract that reflected our agreement, and has since refused to respond to us or to fix the path. His attorney also ignored our efforts to reach a reasonable agreement. We are now filing a legal claim to recover our cost to have the path repaired.

I will gladly discuss this matter with any potential customer...please ask me if you are curious about the details/resolution. The "legal claim" was dismissed by the court. This was a case of customer neglect on a project. -Brandon
Last year I had Brandon and crew put in a fence and a deck for me. They did a fantastic job, professionally, quickly and economically. So I called them back last month to update for front yard with some planting, weeding, pruning, etc... Again the job was professional, quick and economical. I will be calling GrassRoots back again to in a few months to update my backyard and put in a second deck. Thanks again Brandon!
