I've been seeing Dr. Halpern for my diabetic retinopathy for about 3 years. I won't lie, the office waits are horrific. And yes he can sometimes be a little brusque with the staff. Watch and you'll see why. They book between 100 -130 patients a day for him. You do the math, how much time can he spend. Why book so many, because he that's good and people want to see him. I know I do. The time he spends with you, he is conscientious and direct without being rude. He will take the time to explain, and do so in detail. He is not one for idle chit- chat, he has too many people to see for that. That is why he can come off as a little harsh with his staff. When you are working this hard and dealing with this many people, you expect your staff to work as hard. Sometimes they don't and he calls them on it. If you want to go to someone who will spend 20 minutes talking about your life's events I'm sure there are doctors like that. These are my eyes we're talking about. I'm sticking with Dr. Halperen, competence in far more important to me than chit chat.

I regained site in my eye after detached retina surgery performed by Dr Halpern. So I guess he is a good surgeon. But I cannot recommend him because of everything else. He is such a poor communicator. He will give no information unless you specifically ask and even then it is very little. I was followed up for about 6 month and most of the time had no idea what to expect! Also, he is short and rude with has staff and treats them like peons'. As far as Dr Halpern is concerned, you are an eye that needs treatment. The fact that you are scared to death, worried, afraid, your life totally disrupted, and your family members feeling the same way is of no importance to him. He trys to see too many patients but gives none of them the attention they need. He needs to get off his ego trip.

I had the pleasure of visting Eye Consultants of Atlanta seeing Dr. Halpern. The wait was horrific, I waited for almost four hours and when I finally saw him it was for only 5 minutes. How do you diagnose a patient in five minutes. Not only did I feel rushed, he talked so fast..I did not understand what problem I had and what the next step was to have it treated. If it was not for his sweet southern bell assistant, I would have been lost. Adding injury to insult he talked very rude and nasty to a employee, who asked him a simple question. The way he conducts business is unethical, I would have quit and then complained. I advise if you ever need a retina specialist, do not go see Robert Halpern!

The office is always packed but they've a great collection of eye experts. Halpern is straight forward, to the point but pleasant and quite knowledgable. If you're like me and want to get in and get out, Halpern is your guy.
