Bruce Wells came highly recommended to us by several friends. We had him come out and review plan for new backyard. We took out old deck and added in new patio, graded backyard, retaining wall, new sod, and new plants. Project went on for a couple of weeks and crew was able to work around rain. They did amazing job and everything was set up perfectly. Yard now (for the first time) drains properly and it looks great. Very professional job by Hastings and all of the crew that were at our house this past summer. I would highly recommend Bruce and Hastings. Both of our neighbors are using them on their next projects.

We started working with Bruce Wells in 1996 when he redesigned our muddy/ poorly drained backyard. Since then we've invited Bruce and his crew back to redesign and enhance several other areas in our 'garden'. The project management by Bruce on every job has been top-notch. You'll get nothing less than fabulous ideas, great designs, and outstanding craftsmanship when you work with Bruce Wells and his team at Hastings.

We are excited with the new “garden” front yard that Bruce designed and installed. It was a complicated remodeling with both hardscape and landscape. The result is a complete update with plantings for multiple seasonal colors from Spring through Winter. The staff was on site and on schedule for about five weeks. They were professional, hard working, and dedicated to getting the job done right. The entrance rock work is spectacular. As we moved from concept drawings to actual implementation, you worked with us on modifications without adding “change order” charges. When we were uncertain about options, you provided guidance. The house now has added value and has significantly improved curb appeal. When the job was completed, you did not walk away. We appreciate that you have been responsive to minor follow up tweaks. We bid out the work to several vendors. We found Hastings Landscape Services to be the best “one stop shop”. The design option you created was clearly the best. Your price was very competitive. The installation went smoothly. We now know with certainty that we made the best value selection.

Given Hastings reviews on Kudzu, I have to let others know about my negative experience with Hastings. I was going to spend about $7k landscaping my back yard, but only spent $4.5k. I'm glad I decided to do the project in stages. Hastings redesigned it -- building a small retaining wall and planting several native plants. I also decided to take advantage of their Personal Gardener (PG). For a year and a half, I didn't see a PG at my house to check on the native plants that had died during that time. Instead, Hastings would just send random people to replace the dead plants. I wanted them to tell me why the plants were dying, yet no one did anything. I went to speak personally with Michael Toner and he reluctantly promised to send someone. A PG showed up at my house shortly thereafter and looked around, trying to understand the reasons why the plants were dying. The PG left without answers but promised to stay on top of it. Well, the PG fell off the face of the earth. My repeated calls and voicemails went unreturned. Hastings will take your money but they'll fall short when it comes to servicing and making you feel like a true customer. I was referred by a friend of mine, but my friend feels terrible and has agreed not to do business with them given my experience. I was really looking forward to a good relationship with Hastings. I gave the company a number of chances and I got burned every time. I will make sure to spread by word-of-mouth my negative experience

"An Absolute Disappointment"
We are greatly surprised and sorry to read of your dissatisfaction with the service that you were provided by Hastings. As you know, Hastings has a 122 year old tradition of quality and service, so client satisfaction is our uppermost priority! We are not sure where we stumbled in providing you the flawless service, we are so proud of, but please know, that we stand ready to quickly remedy this unfortunate situation or misunderstanding.
In reading your comments, you were apparently satisfied with our landscape design and the retaining wall, as well as, with our choice of the plants and their placement within the scheme of the design. Our client notes indicate that some of your new plants subsequently died. Your own review confirms that on more than one occasion, a member of our landscape service team, visited your home and replaced the dead plants, at absolutely no cost to you. Additionally, our client notes indicate that during each of these service visits, you were advised that other than a lack of proper watering techniques, no other reason was found that would account for the mysterious death of the plants. As you will recall, when your new landscape was completed, you were given care instructions for your plants.
In any event, we do want you to be a satisfied client! Please contact Kim, our senior service representative, at (404) 869-7447, and she will be happy to assist you in seeing that your complaint is fully resolved. You are very important to us...so, we hope to hear from you soon!

We hired Hastings to do our new backyard. The plan looked great and we decided to do it in stages to save money. At first, all was well. Within a year, however, some trees started to die. We called, within warranty to ask for them to come look. Someone came out and said they had been planted badly and would replace them. One was replaced and they were to return to do the others. No one came. When I called, our designer had left and we were told it was then the drought and they'd replace them later. Later, we called again and were told that we were out of warranty. The grass has never done well- we watered, followed directions etc. There is no guarantee on grass, but on further research I discovered that they put in a shade grass in an area that gets half shade and half full, full sun. The grass never had a chance. Now we're re-sodding, replanting and calling someone else.

My mom and dad had Hastings do some landscaping in there back and side yard last year and it looks amazing. Everything made it through the winter and the place is just full of nice colors. The planted something that attracts butterflies and my mom loves watchin that from the window in her kitchen. Good work Hastings!

Hastings designed our entire backyard: landscaping, pool, and waterfall/pond. The design (by Bruce Wells) was spectacular. Unfortunately, shortly after completion (May, 2007), the water in the pond turned dark brown (unable to see goldfish in pond!) and repeated efforts on their part failed to clear the water until a new filter system was installed in late fall, 2008. My family and I lived through two full summer seasons with dark brown pond water unable to see our goldfish. Throughout this lengthy process, a lack of communication and follow-up consistently led to frustrations on our part. It appears that design and landscaping are their strengths, but hardscapes (pools and water gardens/ponds) should be subcontracted to others with more expertise and a higher commitment to service.

Our family loves to buy our Christmas tree at Hastings. They make the whole experience wonderful ... with the hot cider and popcorn ... and the trees hanging so you can see all sides of them. The best part is- - even with these extras, we feel the tree prices are comparable to other business.

I had work done this fall and my container gardens are beautiful and flourishing. Made it through the winter with NO added water. They know their stuff! Just have to go to their website to see what beautiful work they do. And, what does shopperman expect? I have been to a few garden centers this winter, and they had nada. He is obviously not a gardener, otherwise he would realize that gardens are seasonal, and even Lowe's stopped selling trees and shrubs because of the drought, Pike closed, Home Depot closed their landscape stores, and Habersham closed for the whole winter. Hastings did none of these things, is "old faithful", a place people can depend on to be open with quality merchandise. I switched gears this winter, and concentrated on my house plants and orchids. Another reason why I go to Hastings. They have the best selection around! AND, while there picked up all kinds of info on drought tolerant plants and xeriscaping (sp?). They are always one step ahead of the others. I do know that they had to let one of their employees go who I dealt with in previous years for my containers. This sounds like it could be him! Doubt that anyone else would have a complaint about Hastings quality and service.

Hastings used to be a wonderful place to shop. Prices were always higher than other garden centers but variety and selection and new products were always there. Sales people and staff(potting shed) were excellent. I don't know what happened. Selection is now poor, service is minimal and there is such a high rate of turnover that one cannot find those that provided service. Potting shed has gone terribly downhill since previous staff left the seen

When we moved into our new home, we hired Hastings to do a french drain/ retaining wall to prevent water from entering our basement. The wall they built was leaning slightly forward from the day they finished because they didn't account for the pressure of the dirt backfill and the wall wasn't properly anchored. I think because it was a small "easy" job they put their worst people on it... Now, 6 years later, the wall is REALLY leaning and is probably going to have to be replaced. Also, I went into the store the other day to inquire about purchasing bulk garden soil and was told that it couldn't be done. This seems very strange to me since they advertise that they do grading and leveling of landscapes. I guess they can only do jobs where you don't need any dirt added and that aren't intended for growing anything but sod.

I contacted Hastings Landscaping and Design Group based on a co-worker's recommendation. I requested several trees be removed, repair and upgrade my irrigation system and redesign my entire landscaping. They presented a detailed design with itemized cost and timeline for installation. They delivered on every aspect. The workers were efficient and cleaned up at the end of each day. The Project was managed closely and had access to the people to ask questions and advise on progress. These guys do it right and the end result far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend them to anyone who values knowledge, quality and care. Update one year later: my house landscaping looks great and over the year and through the drought Hastings has been fantastic. Used them again to do additional work, I love this company.
