My son has attended HMS since he was 7 months (he is now 2 1/2). He loves it and we love it. The teachers are caring and thoughtful, gentle and kind. The Montessori systems allow my son to be who he is and yet give him a sense of safety and structure. The community is amazing. The school hosts regular classes, book clubs, gardening days, and celebrations. I have some of my best mommy/daddy friends through HMS. Facilities are designed with the child in mind, always clean and neat. So blessed to have HMS in our life!

Hawthorne is an amazing community of children, teachers, parents, and administrators. I find myself lingering at drop-off to watch in awe as the teacher guides my son and his classmates on a magical journey. The kindness, caring, and individual attention my son has received has astounded me, and helped turn him into a lovely little boy. I am thank my lucky stars that he's spent his preschool years here. I really love this school. I would like to add that Hawthorne is a great value. You either pay half-day or full-day and that's it. You pick up your kid when you want, and there are no fees for lessons or early dropoff or late pickup, or whatever. The founders of the school offer all children the same experience, which means that everyone enjoys gardening or music classes together. It really helps foster the spirit of community.

I love, love, love this school. I wish my 3 year old daughter could go to this school forever. The classroom is beautiful and her guide is seeped deep in Montessori tradition, but not afraid to show her gregarious and beautiful true nature. I highly recommend this school!

    Happy Community

Our son started Hawthorne almost 6 months ago. Shortly after he started, two teachers in his room quit. As parents, we were concerned and worried we made the wrong decision in choosing Hawthorne. That same week, the director held a school wide meeting to talk about hiring and retention. The teachers who were hired were awesome and continue to amaze me with their love and dedication. In the 6 months that we have been there, we have seen great changes taking place in the school community. There are weekly playdates outside of school with other families. There are numerous volunteer opportunities and ways to be more involved in your child's classroom. There are class parents and a garden committee. (The veggie garden is amazing!) One class mom plays her fiddle every Friday for all the classrooms! The school host lectures and has a monthly positive parenting book club. Building community is very important to us and Hawthorne is on it's way to something amazing. We have read the negative reviews out there but our gauge is our kid. He is thriving at Hawthorne. He comes home singing new songs and telling us all sorts of cool things he learned at school. He loves his friends and teachers and just seems comfortable there. Despite the rocky start, I'd highly recommend Hawthorne to any family looking for a school where not only their child will be happy but also where you as parents can take an active role in the school community.

I was very excited about the opening of Hawthorne as it was 1/2 a mile from our home. After almost a year filled with almost weekly teacher turnover and administration that remained aloof(to say the least) to parent concern, I pulled my daughter out of Hawthorne. I had mixed feelings at first because I was also a teacher at the school which made it even more convenient but I realized that when it really came down to it,consistency, a prepared environment, and the self confidence and comfort of my child were the cornerstones of Montessori that were most important to me. We have found these traits as well as many other wonderful ones at Mariposa Montessori. It is 17 miles from our house and not convenient at the moment but my child is thriving and I am constantly amazed by the knowledge of the staff there. I am disappointed that Hawthorne didn't live up to our hopes, the teachers(at least the ones who were there 6 months ago) are wonderful and I truly believe that the parents deserve more.

    Disappointing

Our daughter attended the school for a year and a half. While pleased with a few of the teachers, we were deeply troubled by the high rate of turnover and the lack of Montessori certified and/or early childhood degreed staff. We assumed, based on the advertising of the school and the pricing, that this is what we were getting. We attempted to work with the school owner privately and as part of a small group of concerned parents. Nonetheless, the staffing problems persisted. It took us a year to find another school for our daughter. We would have stayed, but it was apparent that the decisions being made were not child-centered and were often erratic. When we finally gave our 6 weeks notice, we were told that we had to leave the school immediately. This had happened to other families and staff, so we weren't surprised. However, it was a malicious & unforgivable decision in our case because we are two working parents. We urge great caution in considering Hawthorne Montessori.

We have been really impressed with HMS, particularly in the gentle and respectful way teachers and assistant staff have responded to our daughter's shyness. After four months of 'school,' our daughter now is far more confident and happy, both at home and at HMS. We also enjoy the emphasis on community at Hawthorne.

I was apprehensive about Hawthorne at first due to the cost. After touring other day cares it was apparent hat Hawthorne was well worth it. Their facility is very clean and orderly. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly and communicate very well. My daughter has really grown leaps and bounds. I feel great about Hawthorne

My daughter LOVES Hawthorne Montessori and I do too. The teachers are wonderful and she has so much fun "playing" while she is learning important skills. Beautiful, clean classrooms with lots of windows and natural light make it a great environment.

Hawthorne Montessori is a place of sunshine and natural beauty. The happy colors and many windows set the mood for children to spend their day in a welcoming environment. The director, Lisa, is building a warm community of families who can develop friendships through events and a parents' book club.

best Montessori pre-school for working families

This is a wonderful traditional Montessori pre-school. The director is warm and open. The lead teachers are highly credentialed and amazing people. The assistants are diverse and joyful. The materials are varied and rotated often. Parent communication is really great with multiple chances for information sharing including e-mail, which is great for working families. For a traditional Montessori school for working parents, you can't do better in Austin.

Our 16-month-old son loves his school. He has learned A LOT in the four months that he has been there. He has a wonderful guide who is very interactive with him and the other children and talks with them with much kindness, respect, and maturity. She is very descriptive about his day and what he is learning and what she will be introducing to him next. The environment is peaceful and inviting and very little-people accessible. There is quality in the materials in the classrooms, and I've seen much thought being put into building on each child's interests and development. I highly recommend the school and suggest visiting and observing the classrooms in action.

This school is NOT what its advertised as. If anything, the Head of School has a great vision but little ability or desire to implement it. Parents are spending a LOT of money and putting a lot of faith in the school for it just to be a "daycare." Observe and ask questions before putting your child in this school!
