I took some dog obedience training classes at Heartland Animal Shelter. These classes are provided to potential volunteers and also other people who bring their own dogs for training. I saw several disturbing things at these classes, things that were NOT SAFE! Do not bring your dogs here! For instance, shelter dogs that are not yet vaccinated for rabies are used in these classes, which could be unsafe for your dogs. Secondly, the trainers and shelter folks do not follow their own rules designed to protect the spread of respiratory illnesses from dog to dog -- They touch multiple dogs (mainly shelter dogs) in these classes without washing their hands after they touch each one. I've even seen a dog get hurt due to the inappropriate actions of one of the trainers. It broke my heart, and convinced me to never go back. If you want your dog to have obedience classes, please find an environment that's safe. Don't go to Heartland Animal Shelter! Stay away!

This clean, bright shelter has dedicated volunteers who really know the animals and do a great job matching them with their potential owners. The cats and dogs here are great and very well cared for.
