Japanese Friendship Garden San-Kei-En

When I worked at the SDMA, my employee pass that allowed me to explore the Japanese garden for free. It was a very pleasant surprise. There is also a nice little tea shop for inexpensive take away food and picnic tables outside for dining.

I have to admit that my expectations were not met when I entered the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. I was expected a fairly large area full of plants, flowers, fish, and Japanese architecture. While the Garden does have some nice plants and flowers, along with a koi pond, the grounds are very small. You will get through the Garden very quickly, leaving you wanting more for your money. If you visit you will most likely enjoy if you keep your expectations low.

The Japanese Friendship Graden in Balboa is so beautiful and relaxing. A great exhibit of exotic plants and flowers, a cherry tree grove, an outdoor ampitheater, bonzai trees, etc . They have a pond which houses beautiful koi fish.

A great place to meditate; to consider your blessings and to cheer you up on sad days. The Garden also provides lovely backgrounds for portrait pictures. I go here on days to remind myself to sometimes stop and considers the trees and flowers.

Definitely a little zen peace amongst the hustle and bustle of Balboa Park. Walking in to the Gardens you definitely feel as though you've entered a part of Japan rich in tradition and beauty.
