John was recommended to me by two former clients who used him a while ago. He certainly knows about dogs and training, but his clear goal is to sign you up for private training, which is pricey, especially if your dog does not have big behavior issues. I opted for the group class which is also available to all of his private clients and provides exposure to other dogs. John did very little direct training during these classes. Dogs and owners spend a lot of time walking together in a circle then sitting and laying down while John provides advice and answers questions. Not the experience I'd hoped for.

I grew up without dogs, and scared of them too. Howevr, I finally gave in for my 11-year-old. We got Cookie (a lab retriever) when she was 8 weeks old.... I was so stressed over every move she had. I cried, yelled at my kids.... Until I found Denelle from Johnknowsdogs . Denelle showed us how to puppy prove our house, our yard, most importantly how to train Cookie. Now Cookie knows she has to sit and wait when I prepare her food, she has to calm down so I will pet her... Now I can feed her, walk her all by myself. I am not sacred anymore. People say :"tolerance is first sign of love" Denelle Rocks

John has been INCREDIBLY helpful in training my 8 month old Australian Shepherd. Awesome techniques -- they work! Tuck was aggressive and unruly but after several in-home training sessions Tuck is obedient and showing major improvement. I am extremely happy with my dog's progress and John's training. Thanks John!

I have now had 6 weeks of dog training with John. I have two dog aggressive dogs. Through training with John I've seen huge results in how my dogs behave. I have found out that this is a process and does not happen overnight. I look forward to more sessions with John and group training. They're extremely patient and very informative with advice on how to train my dogs in a progressive way. Thank you!

About 9 months ago, my husband and I adopted an one year old shepard mix from the shelter. Even though the shelter told us he was dog friendly, he began acting aggressively on his leash around other dogs within weeks. It was really shamefull to have our neighbors avoiding us on the street. My vet recommended John's Natural Dog Training and 2 of my neighbors had also used him. After John's first visit, we felt relieved. Our dog was able to socialize on leash with John's dogs and he explained that our problems were all due to a fight or flight instinct. He showed us how to correct our dog with the leash without getting mad or frustrated. After a few months of private lessons, we attended our first group class. We were amazed at how well our dog did around dozens of different dogs of all breeds and sizes. John explained that a dog is not trained in a month, and as we have been doing this consistantly for these 8 months, we can see that he is right. We are constantly learning new things and seeing improvement. We can proudly say that we have not had any aggressive outbursts in 4 months. We greet all of our neighbors, and have gone to 2 dog fairs, and go to dog park and dog beach. THANK YOU JOHN!!! We could'nt have done this without you! We will refer you to everyone who asks.

We brought a very cute but needy 10 month old, female, sheperd mix home from Central Animal Shelter. I immediately contacted John's Natural Dog Training on the recommedation of my vet. That was the best thing I ever could have done for our dog and our family! Denelle worked with us at home, met me at dog park, took long walks with us, and has been a constant support for the past year. She included my children in the training, addressed all issues I put forth and has offered fantastic advice over and over again. Our dog has evolved into a fantastic companion who often makes me proud at dog school, thanks to Denelle! There is no way we could have done this without her! I have recommended Denelle and John's Natural Dog Training to everyone I know and will continue to do so.

This is the worst training method in town. John, like several others mentioned, showed up for the first 2 appts on time, but cut the sessions short, even though we were paying for 2 dogs. By the 3rd session, it consisted of "walking on the boardwalk" with other "private" clients. No real personal instruction. We never completed our last course. As for the lifetime of group lessons to look forward to: if you call walking in a circle for 45 minutes, repeating the same exercises over and over again week after week with no variation something to look forward to, then go ahead! I personally don't think it's worth $600. On top of that, due to him yanking my dogs on the prong collars I was sold, they are more aggressive than before. I'm looking into a more positive, rather than punitive training method.

We apologize to this client if we did not provide the service they believe they paid for. As we state on the material we provide to them at sign-up, sessions are 30 to 45 minutes in duration and we strictly adhere to that. This works best for the dog which is what we focus on. With two dogs we do require two handlers - or we will handle the second dog. Since this client has not contacted us personally, I am not sure which program they signed up for. Training dogs under distraction is what we strive for, especially if any sign of aggression or fear is indicated. We often use the boardwalk as a very effective tool for this. I am not sure what else the client would have preferred we do if their dogs have issues with other dogs or strangers. (Just working them in their own environment won't resolve issues they have outside of their home) If the client is "yanking" their dog on a prong collar (something we do not do and do not instruct our clients to do) then we indeed would like for them to call us so we can instruct them properly. Classes are fun for the dogs and we do many fun drills - as evidenced by the many honest reviews from dedicated owners who have left theirc positive comments here on KUDZU. Bottom-line - dog obedience training is a process. It takes many phases of training and progression to get good, solid and long lasting results. We at JNDTC believe that a quickly trained dog is not a well-trained dog. Most owners understand it is a process and are willing to put in the work, time and effort. I wish this client, whoever it is, the best of luck but encourage them to call us so we can help rectify the situation
I rescued an Akita who, while overly affectionate with people has/had some real aggression issues towards other dogs. She has been in several "scraps". My friends bought us sessions with John's company for my birthday, I upgraded to a Gold package to have access to ongoing group lessons as Kiya matures. Jessica is our trainer and I have seen a HUGE improvement in Kiya, I am coming along slowly but, humans do seem to take more time to train! We start group class tonight, Jessica knowing how nervous I would be getting into the "distraction" part of training has offered to handle Kiya if she gets too aggressive. It's service like this and passion for the dogs that what I appreciate so much. Having had dogs all my life, I never have had dog aggression issues before, Jessica has been great in our private sessions and I am excited about group class. Kiya even made it through a on leash walk at OB's dog beach last weekend. I would highly recommend this company and Jessica! Thank you!

John and Denelle have made the training of my headstrong Shiba Inu pup a dream (OK, close to a dream! As close as it will ever get with a Shiba.) Their experience and guidance have been invaluable in shaping the little guy into a very well behaved citizen. Don't know what I would do without them both!

Jessica told us to sign up for Beginner Obedience class. Within 10 minutes, she promoted both my dogs to Advanced. The experience has been awesome. They have more confidence, and ignore the other dogs in class. It is possible to teach old dogs new tricks! When Jessica started with our recently adopted rescue, he behaved more like a feral cat than a dog. He pee'd and pooped wherever he was at the moment he had to go, wouldn't walk on a leash either. Within minutes of Jessica working with him, he started to walk on the leash. By the time we completed our second training session, he stopped relieving himself inside my house. I have never been one to believe in miracles before, but I am a believer now! Miracles do happen, and Jessica entering our lives is a true blessing. I don't have a lot of money to spend, but I do not regret getting the Platinum package at all. I plan on taking every group class we can.

I have dog named "Charlie" who is two years old.I got Charlie from "Helen Woodward Animal Shelter" when he was 12 weeks old.Charlie was a sweet puppy but a bit shy,I did everything I was told to do including "Socializing, Obedience School, etc...After a transitional period in my life, moving, breakup, etc..My Charlie started to develop some aggression issues;he actually bit my Mother who I am living with temporarily. I was devastated and desperate.I had to address the seriousness of what had happened.I researched extensively online and after thoughtful consideration called "John's Natural Dog Training Company." Within 24 hours Jessica responded to me and listened patiently as I explained the situation.I couldn't have been more relieved. Within the week Jessica was at my home doing a consultation.Jessica has natural instincts and a soothing logical and patient approach to dog training.I purchased the "Bronze Package" and it was the best money ever spent. Charlie needed structure to feel safe she explained.I set boundaries with Jessica's help and my dog, although not perfect,(but who or what is)has turned into an incredible and dependable companion. It broke my heart to see Charlie misbehaving and I feel tremendous relief that he is becoming the dog I had hoped and knew he could become.I will always recommend Jessica and this company to anyone who has any type of dog with any and all behaviors issues.Thank you Jessica from the bottom of my heart. We have been with John's Natural Dog Training Company Since 2006. The trainers have brought me and my Dog Oso to the point where we have bonded and the Dog is now a Therapy dog. I couldn't have asked for better trainers and friends.

We purchased the 8 in-home sessions in order to get our Papillion to the point she could attend group classes. She was a timid 6-month old when I brought her home and displayed her fear by barking, snarling, growling and lunging at people and other dogs. After only 4 sessions with Jessica, she was ready to attend group classes. I am utterly amazed at the progress. Jessica has been so patient with us (humans being the slow to learn ones). We haven't yet completed the last two in-home sessions and have not only begun group obedience classes, we have started agility class. After the first agility class, our dog was jumping over bars, running through tunnels, jumping up on and staying on a table, and running up and down an a-frame. Unbelievable!! She was totally unconcerned with the other dogs around her and she thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Her confidence has been so boosted by her experiences with John's Natural Dog Training, that people find it hard to believe she was such a terror before. Our dog is now a more attentive, happy, and and trainable member of the family. It may seem expensive, however it is worth every penny.

When we added our Golden Retriever, Fenway, to our family, we also added two important, two-legged beings: John Rubin, company owner and dog training expert, and Denelle Smalley, lead trainer. They've trained, raised, and most importantly, loved him as their own. He is a happy, healthy, loving, highly-social, well-adjusted and well-trained dog because of their dedication, devotion and commitment. They've gone above and beyond from Day One. They're always on time for in-home appointments and group classes. They're just a phone call away with any questions and concerns we've had. Their suggestions for bonding, feeding, leashes/collars, etc., have been excellent. And John and his family have been invaluable, when it comes to doggie day care and overnight boarding. They truly have a sixth sense when it comes to dogs. Fenway is who he is today because of John and Denelle. And oh yes. They've also trained me in the process, which is no small feat! I wouldn't think of training or boarding with anybody else. I respect and trust them!
