In 1965 Ken Kammeyer was an Associate professor on the faculty of California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. The summer quarter schedule permitted him to serve as a consultant to Lynch & Reynolds (L&R), a landscape architecture firm. As a long time resident of Corona, he was asked by L&R if he would like to work on a new community project called the Vail Ranch, in southeast Riverside County. His positive response eventually led to a change in his life and work from academia to the practice of Landscape Architecture. The work at Vail Ranch ? named at that time ?Rancho California? this land that became the City of Temecula. Still named Hill 27, the development was the first housing development completed at Rancho California in 1968. Mature 30-year-old trees now frame the entrance to the housing tract. A literal woods today, this area was a barren hillside void of all plant material except native brush. Now forty years and thousands of commissions later, Kammeyer and Associates still approaches projects with the same enthusiasm and passion as it did with the first.
