Judging by the cold stares of the patrons and having to say "excuse me" twice to an employee there who was standing less than 2 feet away from me, it was obvious this store does not particularly care to have African Americans shop there. I found the item I came to purchase and started back to the checkout but It was a weekend and I noticed that the line(s) were VERY long. Fortunately, it gave me a moment to think & realize it was not worth my time to wait in line & spend my hard-earned money in an establishment where I did not feel welcomed and valued as a paying customer. I am over 50 years old, have lived in Pittsburgh all my life and have frequented stores in the Monroeville area for nearly 30 years. So, in the year 2010, it's hard to believe that people from another country wanting to make the US their "home" would look down their noses at those of us who are born & raised here. I'm in the habit of treating everyone kindly & with respect. The "cold shoulder" I received in Patel Brothers store reminded me of something out of the 60s. I felt as if I had gone through a time warp!! I don't care to find out if shopping there on a weekday instead would be better. If you're not "Indian" or if perhaps you don't have Indian features, I would not recommend patronizing this store. Shop on line where they can't see the color of your skin!
