Was Horribly Mistreated, 5/30/2014

I attempted suicide and was sent to Peachford. Upon my admittance, I was sent to the geriatric unit for 2 days without counseling or the medication that I need to take everyday for my physical... health. They had us sit quietly and watch television all day long. I didn't see a doctor till the third day of my stay. The staff was abusive and cruel, and would verbally attack me for questioning any of the papers they were trying to force me to sign. They kept me days longer than the required 72 hours for a suicidal patient because of my insurance. A girl admitted after me was let out a day earlier than I because she had no insurance, so they weren't making money off of her. We finally had to get the insurance company to say they would refuse to pay for me to stay another day, and magically, they said I was ready to be let out. Have you seen or read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Well, I lived it. If you love someone NEVER SEND THEM HERE. It's why I will never trust another mental healthcare facility ever again.

STAY AWAY from this hospital., 4/23/2014

AWFUL!!! I took my adolescent son in for depression and suicidal thoughts on Monday, April 21 at 5 pm. We waited until 1:30 am Tuesday, April 22 morning to be admitted. The admission was... voluntary and not mandatory. Upon admission the following transpired: I was told that I would speak to the doctor once he evaluated my son. NO ONE ever called. I called 4 times and left 3 messages to speak with the doctor. Finally at 5:30 pm I heard from the doctor. He was nice and informative but rushed off the phone. That same Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30 PM I went to see my son during visiting hours. He was still in the same dirty clothes from Monday morning. We had dropped off 4 bags of clean clothes that morning at 9 am. During visitation when I spoke to my son, he told me the young children are housed with the older children, two children have had money stolen from them and the children were fighting. He went in there depressed but he expressed the fact that he did not feel safe due to theft and the volume of children. The hospital caused more harm than good. I am trying to have my son transferred. STAY AWAY from this hospital.

Don't consider admitting a family member here!

Our son spent 8 days here after we were told he would be out in 72hrs. We never got to meet or speak to his assigned Doctor. Even after leaving him numerous voice messages to call us to discuss his status. When he was informed of his day to be discharded 4 days after. I received a call from billing at 8PM in the evening to see if I could pay the $1000.00 deductible plus 20% of the remainder of his bill on my credit card. Our son had not even been discharged. Absolutely outrageous and unethical practice in my opinion. Visiting is limited and twice we found him overmedicated during our visits. It was a nightmare for us and for him. This place is like a prison. Keep out! Doctors and their staff are not interested in caring for patients. An investigative report should be conducted here soon. This is not a hospital.

Forget your rights!

Recently had to admit my child to the adolescent unit due to medication issues, which were no fault of his own. Signed him in voluntarily, after not being properly informed of our options, but had to fight to have him discharged. We signed papers stating our rights, including the right to information about our child's care at any time. When we called, we kept being told we'd receive a return phone call to give us information. The first full day (he was admitted late afternoon the day before), the return call took five hours and several phone calls. The second day, we didn't get a return phone call at all. The third day, it was almost 5pm before we finally got a call, again after multiple attempts to contact. The first two days, our child wasn't even sure who the doctor was, and only had a quick visit each day. The third day, I was told that the doctor hadn't seen him yet for the day when I got the call (again, it was almost 5pm), but my son informed me he'd seen the doctor earlier in the day and didn't see him in the evening. The one time that the doctor did call the first day, she couldn't keep the doses of his medication straight during our call, and she wouldn't give me any straight answers. I was worried the whole time my son was in there because I was afraid he might get over-medicated since the doctor couldn't keep facts straight. There were very few friendly employees, mostly the 'social workers' (case managers). Son felt like a prisoner!

Needs Improvements

Positive Feedback: The doctors are great and the social workers are very nice. Some charge nurses and therapy staff are great and positive. Negative Feedback: As the parent of an adolescent, I did not feel well informed about the procedures and treatment the children receive. Additionally, it seems that there is not a process for providing family inpatient processes. It was difficult to obtain patient information as well as simple standard procedures such as how and when to contact patients. Operators and reception staff can be rude and unhelpful. I felt as though I was being a bother by asking general questions. Some of the general staff that answer phones in the division for adolescence can be rude and unhelpful. When patients receive extended outpatient services, the procedures are not clearly defined. It is up to the patient and family to know the right questions to ask in order to obtain the information that is required.

RUN AWAY.

My mother was admitted in December 2011. She has Dementia and was only supposed to be in Peachford for about three days. Due to coverage issues, she was there for over a month. Before she was admitted, she walked around her nursing home about 8 hours a day - a constant walker. I saw her on her feet the day she was admitted to Peachford - the day before Christmas - and she has never walked again. While under Peachford's care, she was grossly overmedicated and lay in a geriatric chair 24 hours a day. When she had to visit the ER for a severe bladder infection, we thought it odd that she had 3 diapers on. They. Were. Not. Changing. Her. She sat in her own filth as the nurses simply slapped one pair of diapers over the next. Because they simply drugged her and did not shift or move her, she developed necrotic tissue on her heels from where her feet were constantly resting on the geriatric chair. Her foot tissue died. She has not walked since. If you even remotely care for your loved one - RUN - don't walk, RUN away from this absolutely abhorrent place. This is the worst regret of my life. I will never forgive myself for putting my mother through this torture.

Hoped for Change

I was in Peachford in 1996. It was horrible. Everyone was rude, couldn't get a pillow, it was filthy. Being my first time in rehab didn't know what to expect. Maybe we're supposed to be treated like prisoners. Met so many people who were duped (coerced by asking questions that would keep them there\shown great photos & promo) into coming and couldn't get out. They will try to keep you as long as insurance will pay. I am writing this review now as a friend called me & was thinking of going here; told her no, but decided to look for reviews in case it had changed. It hasn't and having been in other places like Floyd Behavioral Ctr in Rome, GA now know that there are places where you are treated with dignity & respect.

What is this nonsense??

The 1st day I walked in there, I was placed on female stab. My situation wasn't that serious. I felt like I was living in a war-zone with the worst staff and the worst set of patients. The doctors are foreign and do not know how to treat people. I almost got killed by an overdose which made my blood pressure rise to the highest i ever seen it. Every where you go, the place is filthy. You see a doctor for about 5 min a day and that is all the daily attention you get.I have seen and been through all the above reviews and they are no lies. The state needs to shut that disgusting prison or whatever it is down. I got punched in my head three times by one of their retarded patients and the staff there just sat there and let it happen to me and to ALL the other patients in that unit. Then they charge tens of thousands of dollars for garbage. Worst place in Atlanta I have ever been. Money grabbers.

Imaginary Friend

Stayed in female stab. Held me there not for my benefit but for theirs. Staff was INCREDIBLY RUDE. Night staff was terrible and rude. The showers were cold but supposed to be warm. During the day they would shut themselves in their office and it would take you banging on the door several times, sometimes they would just shut the door right in your face, walk off after you ask for something. Tell me I cant take a shower in the only room with warm water, which ironically, was the only room with several beds. When something spilled in the dayroom, the staff would make the mentally ill clean it up. It was so OBVIOUS staff only cared about their BANK and $$$. They arent even doing their jobs right. They threatened me with SHOTS, gave me way too much I believe. I hope the police get involved and SHUT THIS PRISON DOWN. Unclean, IGNORED, cold, locked in, restricted(=)PRISON, NOT EMOTIONAL RELEASE for BROKEN PEOPLE. Made me more depressed and I think it was the goal.

Garbage

Was sent here for drug overdose and all this place had me doing was wishing I actually died. There is zero personal care aside from a rare few minutes a day with a doctor. Most are immigrants and love to pump everyone full and keep them high. The groups are catered exclusively to drug addicts unless you're on the really crazy side, then it's just seated exercising, music therapy, and maybe two or three others dominated by schizophrenics. The CA's do NOT care about anyone there as they appear to be busy with other happenings around the hospital. This place is ridiculous

Poor Quality of Care

Peachford is easy to access but, once in the facility, patients find little individual attention as the programs are understaffed. During the day patients are caroused in a day room while their rooms are locked and inaccessible. Most physicians are foreign medical grads. There are few nursing and attendant staff and, thus, patients find it difficult to gain individualized attention. Social workers are few and far between. Much of the staff seem overwhelmed with paperwork and are constantly counting patients. During my experience grievance went unanswered and I could not capture the attention of a social worker. This model of care is similar to the model created by GA regional Hospital,a state run facility.

Awful, rude

Let me start off by saying I never give places 1-star. Everyone here from the maids up were RUDE as you can't imagine. I should've known when I was kept waiting 45+ minutes for my intake that this wasn't the place for me. I attended the Intensive Outpatient Program. The therapists were rude and not at all nurturing or encouraging. Then sometimes we watched videos from the 80s. The facilities were bleak to say the least. Peachford's staff is unbelievably uncaring and rude, the kind of place you think about when you hear the word "mental hospital." Stay away from this place, seriously.

Worse than a nightmare

I admitted myself due to an, at the time, adverse reaction to a medication my primary care doctor has prescribed. I was there 30 hrs. My first clue should have been that we were told we could not tour where I would be living. Another facility I had investigated gave us a tour of the area where I would live, introduced the staff etc. but it was too far from our home. You get to see the doctor once a day for 15 min. or less. Luckily I got a great doc who immediately realized my anxiety episodes were the result of an incorrect medication and an over dosing of this medication. Once weaned from this incorrect medication at home, I was normal. But this 30 hrs. convinced me this is not a facility to help you overcome any kind of mental issue. To make matters worse, my health insurance carrier has a contract with Peachford to cover care. I got a bill for under $70.00 once my ins. co.paid & I got a collection call from the Peachford Business office BEFORE the bill was due according to the Peachford statement. The rude business office employee told me I was supposed to pay in full AT DISCHARGE. When I asked her why I should have to pay when they have a contract with my ins. co. she did not answer. I am filing a complaint with Peachford and my insurance company. Let me say in closing, during the 30 hrs. I was there, I was for sure the most sane person in the ladies ward !!!! My heart breaks for the people who are forced to go there for treatment.

nightmare experience

Went to for help with depression. Told I could sign in voluntarily and leave voluntarily. LIE They will hold you for several nights b4 no matter what. They will not let you see the rooms or tour the back areas for a reason. It is the dirtiest place with stains and body fluids on couches. food and throw up on floors broken furniture. dirty windows, mean uncaring staff. Lock you out of your bedrooms and bathrooms all day, rarly get to make phone calls out. Did not recieve any care or compasion, was punished for being depressed. Didnt have bed but will tell you they do and made me sleep in cafeteria bench crying all night no. Person was able to committ suicide there the week b4 I came so whole place in under investigation and lockdown bcs it does not provide proper care for depressed pts. They are forced in with coke addicts and left to flounder alone and isolated all day without any emotional support.
