Playhouse South started out in 1960 as the Kettering Community Theater, founded by Jocelyn Feeman. During its first few years the theater had many different ?homes,? including the basement of the Bar-Jan Bowling Lanes, the Dille Barn, and the loft of the Ireland Barn. In 1967, the theater group (then called the Kettering-Oakwood Community Theater, or ?K-O?) set up temporary quarters at Barnes Junior High School. A year later, K-O moved from Barnes (little did anyone know that someday the theater would return nearly 40 years later) to a small, 65-seat building in Indian Riffle Park, where it stayed until 1985. For two seasons they performed in the undercroft of St. Leonard?s Retirement Community Center, then in 1987, they relocated to the Washington Township Hall in Centerville. With this move, the group's name was changed to Playhouse South (PHS), in order to more closely reflect the goal of providing quality live theatre performances to Dayton's south suburbs. In the summer of 1997, PHS moved to Miamisburg to the Historic Baum Opera House where it stayed until 2006.
During the time PHS (then K-O) was operating out of the Indian Riffle Park location, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) began its own operations. Founded in 1982 by Keith Prentice and Pat Carson, the company?s first production was staged at the Fairmont West High School amphitheater (now known as Kettering Fairmont High School). In the winter of 1986, TUTS moved into the auditorium in the Dwight L. Barnes Continuing Education Building. TUTS re-christened the auditorium the Clark Haines Theater, which it called home through 2006. Over the years, other performing groups have grown from the TUTS organization, including the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Miami Valley Chorale.
Given the lengthy history of these two great organizations, it was only a matter of time before they crossed paths. In the summer of 2006, PHS moved to the Clark Haines Theater, and TUTS became a part of Playhouse South. While the resulting organization operates under the ?Playhouse South? name, the company continues to present summer productions ?Under the Stars.?
Playhouse South is an all volunteer organization with 501c3 status as a non profit organization.
