Rathbun's

Went 4/15/11, had a reservation and was seated immediately. After seating waited almost 15 before we even got water. It was very noisy and you could not hear without yelling, tables were too close together and server's rearend was in your face when serving the table next to you. Food was just OK. Won't go back.

My husband and I dined here for the first time recently. We sampled six small plates, one 'second mortgage' special, one side, and two desserts. The best of the small plates was the tuna tartar, and the filet special and charred corn side were also excellent. The much-touted bone marrow was definitely tasty, but it was my first time trying marrow and I was a little grossed out eating it straight from the big bones (though I recognize this is more my problem than Rathbun's). The chicken livers were quality (though again, I was expecting something more like pate; these were fried), and the fried cheese wasn't terrible, but was slightly cold and even saltier than I expected a cheese dish would be. The oyster special was disappointing, but it's my own fault for ordering oysters in January. The salmon small plate was good but HUGE - a recurring theme among these 'small plates', which are less like tapas and more like small dinners in and of themselves. We had to leave half our food untouched to save room for dessert, but it was all worth it for the divine banana peanut butter pie. My husband tried one of the daily desserts, which was good but couldn't compare. The service was impeccable throughout(then again, we were there on a weeknight, which probably helped) - professional yet friendly, and the manager (owner?) brought us a gratis small plate when he felt the wait between courses had been too long. Elevated the 3.5-star food into a 4-star-plus experience.

I have been to Rathbun's twice now and both experiences have been exceptional. My husband took me on my 40th birthday and it was the hi-light. I will be back.

Kevin Rathbun (and his delightful wife) have been providing the best food experience(s) in Atlanta for years. A truly accomplished chef, he has never met a stranger, and does so many things for the needy of this city that they are too many to mention. Keep in mind, it is a bit of an extravagance in these times, but for a special occaision, there is no finer dining in Atlanta!

I've eaten here several times but only in the bar. Even on busy weekend nights I had no problem getting a seat. The service from the bartenders was great. The manager was attentive. And the food was top knotch.
