I don't get it?!, 6/15/2010

How has this restaurant survived? We arrived without a reservation but were seated anyhow, which was nice. The place was quite full but the air-conditioning must not have been working as it was so... muggy inside everything felt damp - as we waited at the bar - where the bartender ignored us for 15 minutes while they got our table ready. You would think they would like to make some money on pricey drinks, guess not. After being seated we found out it was pasta night. Great....momentarily. First, our drinks came out wrong, then found out they were out of bread (although the table next to us seemed to get some delivered about 15 minutes after our request?!) my husband's spaghetti was not spaghetti because they were out of spaghetti and just substituted any old pasta without telling us. The salad was lukewarm and limp iceberg lettuce served in a wooden bowl like my granny has. They were so embarrassed at how everything was so slack and inadequate that they comped our meal without us even asking. Although that was a kind gesture, the point is that a nice night out was ruined with a paid babysitter at home and wilted lettuce in my stomach. My husband never even ate his pasta and we didn't hang around for the ice cream. We figured we would cut our losses and go to the Candler Park Market for a pint of ice cream and we would know exactly what we were getting. What a disappointment. Out of pasta and bread on pasta night?! Who ever would have though!

Not the new hot spot..., 1/19/2009

Our group of six arrived at Shaun's on 1/17/09 with high hopes and left feeling a bit disappointed. Our appetizer arrived, the sardinian flatbread, and it was decent. The portion size was large and... good for sharing. My husband ordered the crab cakes based on the server's recommendation, and while they were delicious, they were small and not worth $32. His side item, the napa cabbage slaw, was underwhelming to say the least. I contacted Shaun's well in advance to request a vegetarian entrée for myself. My plan B was to order the eggplant ziti I saw online, but it was not an option on the in-house menu. When I inquired about my choices, the waitress said my meal was at the chef's discretion based on the side items available. I ended up with mashed potatoes, napa cabbage slaw (think mint-flavored raffia – yuck!), sauerkraut and a small piece of limp bok choy. With the exception of the "raffia," everything on my plate was a white-ish color; not very appetizing even under the dim lights in the dining room. The highlight of our meal was definitely the mint ice cream. Aside from the less than impressive food, the service was adequate and the dining room was cozy, just avoid the table against the floor- to-ceiling window during winter months. It was chilly! I tend to avoid writing restaurant reviews based solely on my vegetarian meal, but in this case I think I can speak for my group when I say that all of us were disappointed.

good, but didn't live up to expectations

I heard very good things about Shaun's but our visit was only OK, especially for the price we paid. Had a great flat bread appetizer and good signature mixed drinks, but the main course plates (one steak one fish) were just average. The space is great, I would try it again.

Amazing food tepid service

My husband took me here for my birthday, and although we had a reservation, it was not easy to get seated or served. However, once the food arrived, we were very pleased. Everything was delicous. I am sure we'll try Shaun's again.

disappointing

After waiting until 9:15 pm for our 8:30 pm table reservation, it was going to take alot to sway our opinion. Alas, our meal was not up to the task. To top it all off, a member of the staff spilled wine on us without offering an apology. At least it seemed like Shaun himself was blissfully unaware of any of the painfully obvious shortcomings. There are too many restaurants in this city offering great food and service to ever consider giving this another try.
