I hired Alison VanCott-Goodwin and Joyce Spence to help me understand some complex tax forms, and ensure my my methods were ideal. Questions were not answered, explanations were not provided, and there are numerous examples of being treated rudely. Alison responded defensively to tax form questions by interpreting them as an affront to her abilities. This wasn't my intent, but I soon became worried about her abilities when she consistently avoided answering questions, and instead told me that I needed to "relax," in a very condescending manner. When discrepancies arose, such as a deduction miscalculation, she would toss a pen at me and abruptly say, "well, you figure it out." When it became clear that she made the miscalculation (a very simple one that could have been prevented by properly reading column labels in my spreadsheet), there was no apology. Rather, she remained petulant throughout our meeting. I requested to work with Joyce soon thereafter. She was marginally better. However, feedback remained unclear at several crucial points, and despite an hour meeting reviewing the information (clearly labeled in Excel), she misclassified 1099 and W2 forms, which would have caused an extra $950 in taxes! It took three emails to make her recognize and correct this error. Her eventual response was "(I) get a little brain dead by this time of the year." Not surprisingly, her fees did not change this time of year. Further errors were made after this.
