Elegance & comfort at the dentist!
On most peoples list of the top ten things I DONT like to do, going to the dentist probably ranks near the top, it did on mine. As our teeth make up an important part of our general health, however, they are not to be ignored. My recent visit to The Vinings Center for Dentistry has moved going to the dentist off of that "don't like" list forever. From the time I walked through their door until the time I checked out to leave, the experience was nothing but pleasant. The office has an elegance that puts you immediately at ease. Everyone I encountered from the receptionist, the assistant and the dentist herself were attentive and gracious. The treatment I needed was explained to me throughly in terms that I could understand, not dental jargon to fly right over my head. The most amazing part of my visit came when they had to get me numbI honestly didn't feel a thing! Thank you Dr. Lumpkin and your fantastic team for turning me into a dental enthusiast. I will most certainly recommend your practice to friends and family! See you again soon!

What kind of Person is Dr. Lumpkin?
I have never been to a dentist before that talked badly about another dentist's work. Been on the ethics board before? HA!!!! Very shady. She made me feel bad, I had to call my old dentist and let her know what Dr. Lumpkin said. Very unprofessional. i will never go back.

Darnell72, Thank you for having been a part of our practice. First and foremost, I would never, as you have put it “talk badly about another dentist’s work”. My commitment to the ethical and professional practice of dentistry is paramount in my core values as a practitioner. My past work on Ethics Committees in organized dentistry, as well as 24 years in private practice has led me to neutral positional about patients past experiences and treatment. I cannot and do not discuss the route by which they have come to me to be treated, but rather take their case as it is today and make recommendations as to how they may improve or maintain health. Dentistry, although it is a medical discipline, is like anything else that employs acrylics, metals, ceramics and other machined materials. Even exceptionally good and beautiful dentistry is subject to wear, fracture, re-decay, infection and breakdown where the original work/treatment was done. These things are simply a function of the ravages of time or biological use. My work, as well as any other dentist’s work cannot escape this reality. When these things occur with and without knowing the circumstances under which they have occurred, replacement of previous work is recommended. Some patients confuse the recommendation of re-treating previous work as an affront to the original dentist who treated them. In fact, ALL dentistry, regardless of who has performed the treatment, under the right circumstances must be updated for optimum function given the patients current set of circumstances, health and previous maintenance history. I apologize if you felt bad because of treatment recommendations. It is never my intent for a patient to feel bad about seeking medical help, nor is needing previous dentistry updated, a personal reflection on the original dentist. We are here to help you get into a state of good health regardless of your previous history. It is irrelevant how you reached that state, but more importantly, how we can assist you in regaining good oral and systemic health. We are fortunate as a practice that virtually all of our patients understand and believe in our commitment to treat them well. As for your previous dentist, I am sure she is a fine practitioner, and am glad that you had the occasion to speak with them. We would be happy, with your permission of course, to share your current digital photographs, x-rays, etc. with your former dentist. I am always interested in reviewing treatment that I have rendered in the past, and she may be as well. I hope I have at least in part answered your question, “Who is Dr. Lumpkin?” Again, we thank you kindly for the time you spent in our practice and if we may be of any assistance to you in the future, we avail ourselves to you. -----Arva O. Lumpkin, DMD

Great Experience
This is the best dentist in Atlanta in my opinion. I've tried many other dentist offices in Atlanta and had never had a good thorough experience until I visted Dr. Lumpkin and her staff. She answered all of my questions and found problems that I knew I was having with my teeth, but other dentist missed. Once you vist Dr. Lumpkin, you'll see how the other dentists don't compare.

Best Dental Practice I've been In!
I have had a lot of dental work in various cities that we have lived in and must say that this practice is a very nice one. They are always thorough, detailed and pleasant. As a matter of fact, this practice is the best dental practice that I have been in. The doctor and staff don't pressure you to get any certain work done. She actually tries to help the patient get in health so they can keep their dental bills down. They also don't try to sell anything. The doctor always gives my treatment, questions, and care full attention. I had an extensive procedure and the doctor called me that night and the staff followed up to see that I was doing well. They have demonstrated everything that I have found important in a doctor and office. I would definately recommend this office to all.

HORRIBLE!!! BEWARE!
I was told that I had numerous cavities which was a shock, because I had never had any cavities in my life. I had five of the cavities filled, and then a family member warned me that some dentist will rip you off. I supposedly had three cavities left to fill, so I went and had a different opinion. My new dentist told me that I have NO cavities, and that my teeth are perfect!! What a scam!!

Dear jshello2, Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion/experience. It is unfortunate that in a profession where dental visits are not high on the "favorites" list, there is also the fear of being, as you put it, "ripped off or scammed". As a former Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Georgia Dental Association, the panel hears this patient concern regularly. I am a very conservative in my treatment recommendations and make sure I strive to uphold the highest professional standards. If you were told you had decay in your teeth, then I am sure you do. I detail diagnostic findings by digital photo, high magnification surgical eyeglasses, decay detecting lasers, extensive education, genuine diligence and computer generated x-rays. Having once practiced with a past president of the Georgia State Board of Dentistry heightened my respect for correct and timely clinical skills. I am positive that as a patient in this practice, you were shown the decay in your teeth in photographs and digitally via computer. Every patient should have the right to be a part of their diagnosis and treatment. In response to your consultation with another dentist, I think other opinions are good and desirable resources to a patient, however, you must be sure that clinical skills, diagnostic equipment and general level of care are similar. Some decay is not detected and diagnosed until it is deep enough to potentially need root canals. We are only left to guess as to why other treatment is not diagnosed or recommended. I choose high standards for my patients and at the same time respect every persons right to choose their doctor and the level of healthcare they select for themselves. We thank you for having been a part of our practice and wish you well on your personal decision to seek dental care in another practice. -----Arva O. Lumpkin, DMD

Best Dentist Ever!
I've been on the lookout for a good dentist around town, and have found one of the best! Scheduling was a breeze, and I didn't have to wait months to get an appointment. The entire staff was wonderful, and Dr. Lumpkin obviously goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable. I've also learned the necessity to keep my turtle necks clean! (You'll understand once you go!)

First Dentist that didn't make me cry
I have always hated going to the dentist, but this visit was painless and I actually enjoyed my visit. I would definitely recommend this dentist to anyone looking for someone that is sensitive and takes time to ensure you are comfortable. The staff was also very friendly.

Thank you very much! We always try to make patients feel comfortable since dentistry is not the favorite experience for most. We as an office try to make sure that we listen to our patients and determine what their individual needs are and meet them. I am glad we have been successful. Again, we appreciate having fantastic patients such as yourself. -----Arva O. Lumpkin, DMD

Awesome Dentist
I love my new dentist! I love the location of the office, I love the staff and I love the dentist. Dr. Lumpkin is great! One thing I really appreciate about having my teeth cared for here is that they give you all the information you need upfront. And they are the nicest people and no, Dr. Lumpkin doesn't hurt you. All in all, I would highly recommend this office for top quality service.

Great Dental Experience
I decided to try a different dentist for various reasons after a subpar experience at a previous dental office. I chose this office after reading the rave reviews on this site and must say that Dr. Lumpkin and her staff definitely justify the accolades. I'd spoken with both ladies at the front office several times prior to my appointment and appreciat their kindness with my schedule conflicts. Dr. Lumpkin and her entire staff were all corteous and professional. Dr. Lumpkin was also very thorough and candid when explaining procedures and answering my never-ending questions. One thing I would like to note is that Dr. Lumpkin does attempt to sell products or services that you do not need and this is something I truly appreciated. Overall, I feel that the quality of service I received was excellent and highly recommend Dr. Lumpkin's practice and assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Horrible Receptionist
Was referred by a coworker to go to this dentist but when I called to make an appointment, I was told by the individual that picked up the phone that she wasn't the receptionist and to call back tomorrow to make an appointment. Her unwillingness to take my name and number and help me book an appointment was extremely frustrating and disappointing. Why bother even picking up the phone if you aren't going to do anything, just let it go to the answering machine. Will never call again. You lost a potential customer. Horrible Receptionist. 4/16/2009..I called during lunch time, so it was mostly your staff (dental hygenist) that answered the phone.

Thank you for taking the time to consider us in your search for a new dentist. We appreciate the confidence your co-worker has bestowed in us by their referral. We are, however, disappointed that you have chosen to label our staff as horrible and admittedly have never spoken to them. We do not know who could have answered your call or why; however, on days that we are not in the office there are technical mechanics, housekeeping, maintenance and computer techs that are fine tuning our equipment and they frequently communicate with their offices and other technical staff by phone. It is possible that someone was expecting a call from other technical contractors and inadvertently answered your call. We apologize for your inconvenience; however, I am relieved that someone who is not a staff member did not attempt to help you without proper direction or authorization. --Arva O. Lumpkin, DMD
