Too much reliance on assistants
From the brief amount of time I have spent with him over several procedures, Dr. Wingfield seems like a nice guy and a good dentist. My fillings and crowns have come out fine. However, I'd say about 90% of the work has been done by his assistants who have not built up the professionalism or experience to put a patient at ease. The midtown practice set-up is distracting because you can hear procedures going on in adjacent rooms and the head-sets and walkie talkie things the doctors and assistants wear to communicate with their staff as they are working on you is unsettling!

not a happy experience
I didn't have a very good experience with this office, which is a branch of Nanston Dental Group. It really isn't the dentist's fault I suppose, since he is probably just an employee, but you cannot separate the financial and management aspects of the experience especially when it comes to rating value and service. For example, I had 2 (count'em) 2! first visits because the first time I went I had confirmed by phone that they took the dental plan I was on and gave them all the details. When I showed up I duly filled out all the forms and then waited a while, and then they told me, sorry we dont accept this plan. Great. The second time I had insurance and gave all the details by phone so they could verify coverage. Well, they forgot and it resulted in them making me wait for a long time because my insurer's office was in a different time zone and it was really early. Thanks alot. The worst thing of all is that I was overcharged (according to written and verbal statements from my insurer) by $200. I called the office manager at her request, was told by the guy who answered, "she is standing right next to me" only to be put on her answering machine. Thats the last I heard from her, and I get no response from Nanston either.

Remarkable Dentist and Staff
As a lifelong, 60 year-old dental patient with very challenging and unique dental issues requiring the care of several dentists over the years, I feel that I have an excellent frame of reference to evaluate a dentist and his staff. Over the past 7 years, Dr. Wingfield has transformed my previously unattractive mouth into a relative poster smile, and he and his staff have taken measures to greatly improve my overall dental health in the process. He has that rare combination of compassion, bedside manner, communication skills, high-tech orientation, and outstanding general dentistry expertise that elicits complete confidence in his abilities. He sets high expectations for his staff, and those expectations are certainly reflected in their competence. He has also cared for my family of four during the same period and has provided an equally outstanding standard of excellence in dental care to them, as well. I cannot recommend him more highly.

If You Want a Perfect Smile, See Dr. Wingfield!
This is the place to come for cosmetic dentistry that looks natural and is customized to your liking!

After a lifetime of bridgework that felt weak and was becoming discolored, Dr. Wingfield and his staff gave me dental work that allows me to do the little things: bite into a burger at a cookout without worrying I would lose a bridge, or smile in a picture without worrying if my teeth would look natural.

On top of a great product, the service is incredible. His staff is wonderfully nice and they helped me make decisions that a family would normally help a person make; since my family couldn't be there, they filled in!

Can't say enough great things!

Fantastic
I have a totally unreasonable fear of Dentists, I am not sure why this is or where it came from but it is very real and scary. Dr. Wingfield is very gentle and efficient and puts me at ease as much as possible. I do and will contiue to refer anyone i come in contact with.

Detailed – Professional
I visited Dr Wingfield for the first time a few days ago and would highly recommend his office. I have yet to have services other than a detail consultation however; he took his time and had great concern for my situation. I look forward to keeping Dr Wingfield as my primary dental provider. His staff was very warm and prompt when greeting me for my appt.

Good care but production shop
Not sure what to think here. First check-up I met Steven-really impressed and had a really thorough cleaning. Thought I'd found the place to go. The next check-up really got me wondering. I was taken in for x-rays. Again.second time in a row. When I asked why the x-ray tech left the room, came back and said that my insurance covered it. Not..we feel you should have it for health reasons. Nope.my insurance would cover it. Wrong answer. Then the hygienist asked me if I wanted to be tested for oral cancer and made me sign a release yes or no. Test not covered by insurance..$65. The required signature yes or no was something that would intimidate a lot of people into doing it. Steven said that they were saying it was as important as a mammogram. From what my regular dr. said and based on its very brief mention on the ADA web site, the only people who think that seem to be the manufacturer of the expensive equipment and this dental group who bought the stuff. OK, so the cleaning was fine, nice job. Steven came in for what amounted to about 30 seconds. So much for any hands on cancer screening etcor big concern over my health. General concensus is that this dental group has high overhead and is finding all sorts of creative ways to pay for it. The comments made by the staff and from general observations have led me to simply not trust that this group has my health as their first concern. I'm looking around for another dentist.

Steven J. Wingfield, DMD replied on 09-21-2007
Our office is a comprehensive dental practice, and makes recommendations based on scientific evidence. The death rate in the United States for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkin's disease, cancer of the brain, liver, testes, kidney, or ovary. It is our responsibility to provide cutting-edge techniques, including those for the detection of oral cancer. Even though insurance companies are often slow to pay for new technology, that fact does not stop us from offering the new oral cancer detection system, and letting the patient make their own choice about their health care. Offering something that an insurance company does not pay for does not mean we are trying to "intimidate" anyone or that we have "high overhead", it simply means we are trying to take the best possible care of our patients as possible. I'm sorry that this Reviewer's perception is that we are all about "production", but that couldn't be farther from the truth. We are ONLY concerned about taking excellent care of our patients using all appropriate tools (x-rays, oral cancer screenings, periodontal screenings, etc), educating them on their conditions, giving them choices, and providing them with the best health care and service possible.
