Here are four uncommon signs that your body is not happy with your food or beverage choices.
1. Mouth sores
Some allergies to food can cause canker-like sores, tingling and itchiness in your mouth. The painful lesions and irritation are often caused by hidden ingredients in food and beverages such as caffeine, herbs or chemical thickeners.
2. Painful joints
When your body can't tolerate a certain food group or type of food, it can cause swelling and inflammation in your joints. An intolerance to gluten--a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and some oats--causes Celiac disease, which will make joints sore. Although this is an autoimmune illness, it reacts much like food allergies and flares up when gluten-containing foods are eaten.
3. Abdominal cramping
Many people associate vomiting and diarrhea with an allergic reaction. But a more mild abdominal cramping may also point to a food allergy. Don't dismiss stomachaches that come on after a meal. This could be an allergy or symptoms of a stomach ulcer.
4. Feeling dizzy
Some food allergies can cause a feeling of light-headedness, blurred vision or vertigo. If this occurs, sit down immediately and have someone near you call for help.
Do you notice any of these problems within a few minutes to hours after a meal? It is time to get a professional opinion from a local physician in the Atlanta area. However, if you notice swelling in your throat, lips or face, go to the emergency room of the closest hospital immediately.
