In order to reduce the chances of your vehicle breaking down, it is important for it to undergo regular car maintenance. Basic upkeep does not take long and costs less than getting large-scale problems fixed later on. The following are the five top things you need to do to keep your car running smoothly.

Change the oil every 3,000 miles or every three months

Have you ever tried to blink with a grain of sand or some dust in your eye? If you don't get the debris out of your eye, it hurts and can even cause damage. Running dirty oil in your car does the same thing to your car's engine. Sure, your car can't feel pain like you do, but the dirty oil creates friction that can cause harm.

Check coolant levels

Your car needs adequate coolant the same way your body needs enough water to cool itself off on a hot day. Check the coolant overflow tank to make sure the fluid is at the level marked on the tank. If the coolant is low, fill it to the marked line on the overflow tank with the type of coolant your car's manufacturer recommends.

Check the brake fluid and test the brakes

Wipe off the lid of the brake fluid tank before removing it to make sure no dirt falls into the fluid. Then, look in to see whether the tank is filled to the line. If the fluid is low, use the brake fluid recommended in your owner's manual. To test the brakes, drive slowly, then gently engage the brakes. A wobbling or uneven sensation when depressing the brake pedal indicates it's time to get your brakes repaired.

Replace plugs and wires

Spark plugs and wires often come with a lifetime warranty, but don't let that fool you-- they do not last a lifetime. Your vehicle's performance is the first consideration, but it is best to follow the recommendation of your car's manufacturer to determine the best time to change the plugs.

Rotate the tires every 5,000 miles

Have you ever noticed how the soles of your favorite shoes don't wear out evenly? This is due to the way you move and the way you carry your body when you walk. Tires are the shoes of your car and do not always wear evenly, which can become a serious safety hazard. In order to slow this process, get your tires rotated. They will last longer and keep you and your family safer.

Basic car maintenance and routine car inspections will not solve every problem you will have with your car, but these top five car care tips, along with the help of your Atlanta-area mechanic, will keep your car running smoothly for as long as possible.
