Thanksgiving Planning Guide for 2017

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and with it comes a multitude of tasks to get your home prepared. A little strategic planning can go a long way, but not as far as a little help. Here’s what to do, who to call, and how to get your home ready for Thanksgiving.

Know Who is Coming

Get your guest list together early so you can make sleeping arrangements and plan the menu. Call and get a confirmation—if people want to drop in last minute, at least you’ll have a “maybe.” If you're having a full house, keep track with save-the-dates on a site like Paperless Post (their cards are gorgeous).

Plan Sleeping Arrangements

If you have a house full, you’ll need to wash bedding and plan who will sleep where. If you have the space, try to keep sleepers out of the common areas like the living room. Buy a blow up mattress and hide people in the playroom or office so you don’t have to sacrifice your couches and common areas to late risers.

Prep the Kitchen (or Plan To Host Outdoors)

Don’t let your Thanksgiving morning get overwhelming with a cluttered kitchen. Take things out of the kitchen that don’t belong there, clean out your spices, and clean out your freezer and refrigerator.

Get your spices organized and trash anything that is out of date.

If you're somewhere warm enough, you can always host your party outdoors. Here's a guide on how to throw an outdoor Thanksgiving

Prep the Bathrooms

Wash towels and bathmats ahead of time. Stock toilet paper, tooth brushes, soap and shampoo. Outfit each bathroom with a plunger just in case. If your system is old or you have a septic tank, have a plumber come out to make sure everything will function. Find a plumber here.

But don’t exhaust yourself. Hire a maid or go through our Fall Cleaning Checklist. Here’s what it costs to hire a maid. If you need to get your carpets cleaned (before OR after the holidays), here’s what that will cost.

Plan the Thanksgiving Menu

Deciding what to make is the hardest part. Here are a few guides to help:

If you’re not thrilled about the idea of cooking, have it catered so you can have a relaxing day. Here’s who to call.

When is Thanksgiving 2017?
