    Brutal, brutal experience

With our 17-year-old cat, my stated concern was her ability to endure any anesthesia/surgery. After the Clinic's tests yielded "normal," Dr. Hall recommended and performed a full-mouth extraction. ($2,651). The next afternoon (Thurs), Dr. Hall called about her status: I was worried about her becoming dehydrated. Should not be a concern, he responded. "We gave her lots of fluids during the procedure . . . she should be all right until Sunday." I allowed the evening, and the next day (Friday) to pass—observing the animal mostly sleeping, administering her medication, and trying to provide water via medicine dropper. By a.m. Saturday, my worry returned, and I called the Clinic—reaching only a recording about M-F hours (no emergency number). We took our cat to an emergency service, where the admitting vet assessed: "marked dehydration . . . GI bleeding, pain or anesthetic related." By late evening, they said she would not survive; and so she was euthanized. (Hospital: $791) To all of this, the Clinic's response was: "sometimes these things happen for no known reason . . . you could have called us Friday night, when we were here." No credit on the bill: "we rendered a service." So sorry for your loss. Unquestionably, the animal would be alive today, if we had not encountered these people. And no sense of responsibility, on their part: "We followed procedures...just going to happen sometimes; unfortunately, when it happens to you, it's 100%." Move along, now
