I was recommended Anna Lisa Derenthal for my 17 year old transgender daughter, by her psychiatrist. My daughter met with her twice and seemed to like her. She has been happy to continue to see her. My ex husband does not support our daughter's decision but he did agree to drive her to appointments as I was working. I paid for every bill by check (so my name and my name alone was clearly visible on the check). The insurance was in my name. However, my issue is this. I contacted Ms Derenthal through her website and via phone. Both times I left a detailed message. I wanted to be able to support my daughter through her transition which she had decided to make on her 18th birthday. I explained that I wanted to be in the best place to support her, I asked for a recommendation for parental support group. I have waited 6 weeks for a response and still nothing. She managed to cash my check but unfortunately could not even acknowledge my messages. I understand she would need my daughter's permission to speak with me and I feel that 6 weeks was ample time for that. Instead I received a message from my ex husband today telling me that she has now contacted him and would like him to obtain permission from my daughter. Today is my my daughter's 18th birthday and I am left alone to help her navigate the most difficult decisions in her life. I feel that a return phone call to explain how best to gain permission was not too much to ask.

She offers guidance, not judgement, she listens and seems to care about her patients. I would not always agree with her but I always knew she had my best interest at heart.

She had an easy-going personality which helped put me at ease and open up. However, all I wanted was to feel accepted and that my voice was worth listening to. I did feel these things at times in the beginning, but in the end it seemed the issues that she wanted me to work on were not the same as mine. I felt she needed to at least acknowledge the direction I wanted to take it in. Instead, her response was very "you should," opinionated, and filled with unasked for advice (no clarification or questioning) which made me feel judged, disrespected, and without a voice.

Anna Lisa Derenthal facilitated one of our many free Divorce Support Groups for several years. The participants in this group had nothing but positive things to say about her caring and wisdom. Margot Swann Founder & CEO Visions Anew The Divorce Resource for Women
