My ex and I agreed to a defaulted judgment. We agreed to a settlement that Mrs. Whitaker was given. I was never served with the documents and when I told my ex I wanted my half (24 yrs of marriage) he said I agreed to take nothing. Mrs. Whitaker told him the settlement wasn't legal, so they made up their own, completely unknown to me. I never received final documents, never received a new marital agreement, and have come to find out judge refused to sign off on property settlement. When I called to ask about it, she never responded. Finally I found she closed her office? The worst. She knew what the agreement was, ignored it and submitted something completely different. Now I get to hire an attorney to get what is rightfully mine. USE SOMEONE ELSE.

I hired Ms. Whitaker's firm in February 2014 to handle my divorce. I really liked the first attorney I dealt with, but when she left the firm, they did not advise me. I got an email from a lawyer saying she was now my attorney, but I only heard from her once. Apparently after that Ms. Whitaker took over my case, and that's when the problems started. She often told me things that contradicted what the first lawyer said, but my biggest complaint was the lack of communication. I was rarely advised of the progress of the case and found out things from my estranged husband, including the fact that the divorce had been finalized. His lawyer had known for over a week, but Ms. Whitaker had no clue. Her excuse was that it was finalized so quickly. Her office once sent a letter to opposing counsel that contained gross misinformation and less than professional language, which they did not clear with me first. I did not receive a bill from her office from September through December, because their "computers were down." When the bill did arrive it had double billings and no credit for a payment I had made. I wrote a letter complaining about the problems, and Ms. Whitaker's response was a very defensive letter telling me what a great lawyer she is. There was no apology, and she attached a form for me to sign stating that I was now representing myself. There was no warning and no explanation. That's just the tip of the iceberg. My advice is to steer clear of this lawyer.

I read the comments below about attorney Winifred Whitaker. I couldn't believe believe what I was reading She was my 2nd divorce attorney and my final one. She is a lot cheaper than the 1st divorce attorney that didn't get anything done and her office staff is excellent and caring I would recommend her to anyone!!!!!!!!

I used Miss Whitaker based on a semi-favorable review from this site. Unfortunately it did not turn out well. I was charged over $5000 for a single required divorce-related court appearance. Her staff is incompetant and charged me for reviewing the same info again and again. I tried to reason with them on the gross overcharges with no success. She seems like a very nice lady but I need a good attorney. Stay away.

Upon recommendation from a friend's friend who says she was very professional and good at what she does, I retained her services for a pending divorce. That was 2 years ago - I've since decided to postpone the divorce and am trying to recover the balance of my retainer( about half what I started with since every phone call or e-mail brings a hefty fee, even though I've done nothing more than fill out the papers & communicate with her office several times). I called and faxed a written request on Dec. 16th. I called on Jan. 11th. No return calls - nothing. Very unprofessional communication and lack of consideration since I let them know I was basically desperate for money having lost my job & many other financial setbacks after separating. I've called twice today and am now told the attorney and bookkeeper are on vacation until Jan 19th. I'll update this review & rating as soon as I know more, but if you're thinking about retaining her services, you may want clarification up front how to get your money back should you change your mind - good luck!
