Duane Carlton Brooks
I was born Duane Carlton Brooks on March 10, 1954 in Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For the first several years of my life my parents and I lived with my grandmother (on my mother's side), then we moved to our own place in the projects located in the Hill District section of Pittsburgh. I attended first Anna B. Heldman nursery school, then A. Leo Weil Elementary School, then Schenley High, and finally, Carnegie-Mellon, where I graduated with a B.A. in.. English with a Creative Writing option. My parents divorced when I was nine and I wound up living with my Mom, so throughout my life I didn't see that much of my Dad. In 1979, my Mom and I moved again, this time to our very own house in the Penn Hills section of Pittsburgh. In 1990, I started working as a courier for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, although I had to opt for early retirement because I came down with a major case of osteo-arthritis. This is when I wrote, Tales from a Lifelong Neurotic.
