The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian hosts compact exhibitions of contemporary and historic Native American art with an emphasis on the Southwest. Downstairs, a faithful reproduction of a turn-of-the-20th-century reservation trading post, called the Case Trading Post museum shop sells Native American jewelry, kachinas, baskets, books and toys by some 100 artists. All proceeds go to the Museum and the artists.
With so many galleries for Native American art in Santa Fe, it can be intimidating to choose where to shop --even if you know about the fake turquoise. But go to the jewel-like Wheelwright, and walk downstairs to find work by living artists, where you know the proceeds are not only museum quality, but where they are shared directly with the artists themselves -- and with the museum.
