In 2012, Dr. McGarrah recommended giving primary custody to my son's mother despite my descriptions of the abuse he had been enduring from her for years. Approximately 14 months later, Georgia DFCS visited the house where my son then resided and concluded that he "should not be alone with BMO". ("BMO" means birth mother.) My son's psychiatrist reached the same conclusion and I was finally able to obtain primary custody in August of 2014 (after a particularly violent event necessitated that I obtain an emergency ex parte custody order). It is incomprehensible why Dr. McGarrah recommended returning my son to an abusive environment without any supervision or counseling. After she made that recommendation, my son informed me that Dr. McGarrah had never even asked him about what had been going on in the home with his mother. That critical information should have been carefully extracted from my son as he was then quite terrified of his mother (he was only 11). Not only did Dr. McGarrah's custody recommendation result in continued trauma for my son, but she also failed to identify the need for his mother to obtain the necessary counseling which could have benefited her greatly. (Tragically, my son's mother was herself a victim of extreme childhood violence.) I believe that Dr. McGarrah is dangerously incompetent and should not be trusted to conduct these types of evaluations for the court. (Longer review posted on Yelp.)

If you care at all about your future relationship with your kids or ex, please do NOT use Barrie/Cliff Valley. Her intent is to divide and put wedges between people. It is clear she has bias and personal motive to take all the money she can get by requiring so many private sessions. It is a racket, stressful and unfair. My attorney (Bill Lester) told me I was required by my ex to see Barrie Alexander as part of a contentious divorce. Naively, I believed this was in my best interest to cooperate. The whole situation was not clear, dishonest and designed to completely exhaust you and rack up money (close to $35,000) . Not to mention, the additional time she "needed" to review with my attorney (Bill Lester) @ $400/hr. Like others, I begged B.A. to release us - which she refused. Barrie then used her power to discredited me for "being late" but required us to drive in traffic for 6:00 pm appointments after a long day of work. She made huge assumptions and judgement on my life/parenting based on her very conservative ideology of perfection. It was completely unrealistic and totally biased with my ex (who spent considerable more time flattering her)! She made our lives impossibly complicated and horrifically stressful! She was unprofessional in attire and needs to go on a diet before she points so many fingers at us trying to do the best we can as single parents!

The terrible reviews below are just rubbish and untrue! Dr. Alexander is one of the most competent Psychologists I have ever dealt with. She has a excellent understanding of the custody process and what is important to focus on. We were involved in an extremely contentious custody case that no one wanted part of, but she saw my 4 stepchildren and was always interested in their well being. She also saw the adults involved. She was professional in her written documentation and strong in her court testimony and cross examination. She returned all calls as promptly as possible, sacrificing her personal time to discuss pending issues.I can't recommend her more highly.

After taking my child to dr. Alexander it has come to my attention that many reviews on sites like these are written by parents who were not deemed fit to gain custody of their child. They feel that posting rash, and honestly incoherent, reviews will scare others away from her. She is extremely professional and well worth the price of you would like a fair evaluation. I really hope reviews from those who did not receive the result they wanted do not hurt her reputation.

We used Cliff Valley "psychologists" I am not sure if Barrie Alexander is suffering from signs of premature Dementia? Advocate, forensic investigation, fair, evaluations? All untrue, Our Children needs and interests are of no use to her. Barrie Alexander is like Glenn close from "fatal Attraction". Not only is she incompetent, so are her "tests" (developed in 1970's as a tool, for "Psychiatrist" to diagnose trouble teen age boys with personality disorders). Never were they intended for use by Barrie Alexander, non medically trained self. She is a psychologist using these outdated tools like a snake oil sales man. Barrie Alexanders very much FOR PROFIT Opinion is entertainingly erratic irrelevant, Liable, and puts your children in danger. Cliff Valley psychologists are NOT Doctors. Nor should they make decisions above their pay grade. Barrie is playing "God" with her over inflated opinion of herself and the power she elects is hers because she puts it in her "disclosure agreement" she thinks she super-seeds a physician's orders and the Government protected HIPPA right to privacy. She doesn't. She even charged our credit card an additional $14,000 over and above the extortion rates. And as Barrie Alexander stated in open court on Feb 2 2014; If you don't pay me or question your charges, I will not find in your favor. A matter of court record. The only best interests Barrie has in mind are hers and her Bank account balance. NOT OUR CHILDREN.

Barrie Alexander has been caught using heroin in her office and sleeping with clients she ultimeyely recomends they receivr custody. She is weak, a coward, confrrntational, unrealistic, guilty of RICO, a known child abuser, and a person who is fearely jealous and insecure. She is suffering from early signs of dementia and a know abuse of her minor children she is suppose to be conducting an independent, paid for, fair evaluationl wirh the best interest of the children in mind. She uses testing from the 1970 developed for diagnosing 17 year old boys with BPD. She has violated psyciatric privilege in an effort to exploit clients with unrelevent issues that are inexcusable. She stole over $14,000 from us to pay for her sons graduation. Barrie Alexander MSW, not a doctor, not a person who can prrscribe, just ruin children's futures by recommending as stranger convicted child abusers have full custody from thier mother, step father grandparents and 25 additional family members cousins aunties uncles all within 40 yards. Shr Has an extrodanary self inflated ego of herself and believes she is a legend in her own mind. Complaints to attorney General office and the GA board of Proffessional license.

Hours are inflexible and convenient only for the therapists Ability to connect and gain the trust of younger clients was nonexistent Billing haphazard Therapy was superficial at best, not challenging, not insightful, not asking anything of parents or child, just extremely weak on every level. This was the only thing that two estranged divorcing parents could agree on in the entire process.

An awful, expensive waste of time. B. Alexander takes advantage of people at their most vulnerable. I heard her say inappropriate things to my children. She was often late. And it seems like she perpetuated litigation rather than solved any disputes. She charged us huge sums of money to evaluate our custody dispute but then charged more money to get her to write a report. He "report" was some kind of computer-generated paper where she just filled names and pronouns in the blanks. Please do not even consider this person~you will regret it.

No productive counseling for my child..she begged not to have to go ...all she is is a paid for divorce counselor..probably unable to get legit clients...360 per hour for a kid to draw... Did not help at all in resolving a tough situation but promoted disharmony...She also charges you for everything and is power hungry and dishonest..

Barrie Alexander was very competent and helpful. She clearly has been doing her job for many years and knows exactly how to do it well. She was very nice, and her staff was great as well... I would definitely recommend her, especially to couples with children!

A number of years ago, my attorney told me I was required by my ex to see Barrie Alexander as part of a contentious divorce. (My ex later told me that was untrue: it was my attorney's idea to send us to B.A.)(Joe S of Decatur). Neither the attorney nor B.A. told me that she was evaluating for custody matters, but she was indeed. This was not honest. I was completely exhausted and begged B.A. to release us. An hour of driving to a 6:00 pm appointment after a long day of work and then another hour to drive home was just adding a lot more stress to a horrifically stressful time. She refused. She cared about the $$!I finally quit going. She was sometimes late, unprofessional in attire, and not helpful whatsoever. She may have some sort of partnership with certain divorce attorneys who continue to send their clients to her. I would not advise using Barrie Alexander.

We used her for a psych eval for my child during a custody dispute. The only thing that my ex and I agree on is how incompetent Dr. Alexander is. She charged $300/hr and had a final bill of over $5000. Her report was shabby at best and did not reveal any information other than the notes she took during "counseling." That is great and all but we would have loved an opinion rather than just regurgitation. She charged $300+ for tests that other psychs charge $60-$80. THEN SHE CHARGES YOU $300/hr IF YOU WANT THE TEST RESULTS!!!! IF? Why would we take the test IF we did not want to know about the results?

If it was up to Ms. Alexander, our child 'needed' to be under her care weekly, and 'likely for years', pulled out of school, excessive fees, little feedback, and our child saying that she said it is okay to have secrets from the parents, the school counselor, the primary physician, and discussed adult issues and money regarding a court case in front of a child! Plus, when I signed in her office, I saw another patients file open on the counter. This was a very distressing experience for our entire family.

Excellent ability all around, in a very materially dense and complicated case. She was able to drill down into the truth when two opposing parties had polar opposite views and accounts on just about everything. I would highly recommend her in difficult cases.

Dr. Barrie Alexander was chosen to perform an evaluation to settle a custody dispute. Her evaluation was costly (> 10,000 dollars), superficial, incomplete and did not even include a written report to support her decision. The entire process was time consuming~taking over 6 months! When my daughter asked Dr. Alexander:"why do I come here?" Dr. Alexander replied, "so that the judge doesn't have to decide what parent you are with...." My daughter who is 8 years old perseverated on her answer and became scared of a judge. I think it was a non-therapeutic answer to an important question and I wonder what else may have been said to my child during a one-on-one session? I feel that her custody evaluation only complicated and lengthened our divorce and only created more drama and more focus on the divorce for our children. I think hiring Barrie Alexander was a mistake and feel that she lacked professionalism throughout the process (she was often late for appointments, brought her animal into the room, making inappropriate comments regarding my child's clothing ect. ) I would strongly recommend avoiding Barrie Alexander for any type of custody evaluation.
