What started as a corner record store in 1945 has bloomed into a 6 location, family-run appliance business. Gerhard's Appliances still provides the Philadelphia and Tri-State area with the unparalleled service that it was founded on.
In the past 70+ years, the times, products, and technology have changed. However, one thing remains steadfast: Charles Gerhard's vision and core principles. "It's all about the customer, not the product." Mr. Gerhard said in 1957, "We don't sell appliances. We sell customer service. Always have & always will."
In 1945, home appliances such as automatic washers and dryers, dishwashers, and electric ovens had become the envy of every American family. But the prices were more than the average family could afford. Charles knew things had to change. He wanted to make his family, friends and community's dreams become reality. But Charles.. wasn't looking for the best deal exclusively. He knew the service he was providing would "make these products that much better." And thus Gerhard's Appliances was born.
This notion of top-notch customer service carried on to the next generation of Gerhard's. Charles Jr, Jay, Carol, Edward, and Marjorie all kept the core values close while expanding their business. They opened a second store in Doylestown PA, a nearby suburb. Their show rooms had huge displays and were staffed by experts who knew the ins and outs of their products. This ensured Charles Sr's vision of helping customers find products that best suited their needs.
Today, Bud, Rich, and Gerry Gerhard (surrounded by their brothers, sister, sons, daughters and even grandchildren!) still spend the majority of their day providing the Philadelphia area the best deals on their new appliances with the absolute best service as well. With 6 stores, over 120 employees and a lot more happy customers, the tiny record store they held dear has certainly blossomed. And as much as we love to see the family business flourish, Mr. Gerhard is known for saying "It doesn't matter if we are selling records out of a corner store or a Sub Zero out of our living kitchen, it's the customer that matters! And the service we provide that makes us different from every big box store out there." The calendar may change, but you can count on Gerhard's to remain the same.
