Renowned ophthalmologist, specialized in vitreo retinal diseases and with various established practices in South Florida, Dr. Melgen is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is the Founding Director of the Melgen Retina Eye Center, a center specializing in disease and surgery of the vitreous and retina, such as Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration, which are the major causes of blindness in the world among the elderly. Dr. Melgen has been internationally recognized for.. his innovative medical advances. Upon completing his training at Harvard University in 1986 he quickly began establishing himself as a visionary by becoming the first surgeon in Florida to perform outpatient retina surgery and by pioneering laser therapy. During a time when no treatments were readily available for Macular Degeneration, Dr. Melgen was already obtaining successful results with laser treatments that later became the standard of care, but were rejected years ago. In 1988, Dr. Melgen founded the Melgen Retina Eye Center in South Florida. From its inception, the Center became affiliated with Harvard Medical Schools Schepens Eye Research Institute (the largest independent eye research institute in the nation) and together they conducted successful research leading to the use of the Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (SLO), which became the basis of the development of instruments that are currently used today to diagnose and treat retina-related diseases. Many of his patients have traveled far distances to be treated at the Melgen Retina Eye Center, among which include Latin American Presidents, elected U.S. officials, sports figures, and famous artists and singers.
